Smile Lessons I learned from our Super bowl snacks

So we had snack for the Super Bowl "party" My son asked for football food so

Hubby research a boneless buffalo wings recipe. Found a Applebees copy cat one. Since daughter doesn't like spicy I picked up a tysons anytizers BBQ wings bag.

    Lessons learned
    1) From scratch nuggets are so much more Tasty than store bought (IMHO)
    2) the prepackaged snack foods (like the anytizers) are so expensive. Next year I'll plan ahead and make BBQ wings in the crockpot. (maybe freeze some to make my own bag of "Anytizers")
    3) Hubby's home cooking is better than restraunt meal. Loved the copy cat ones better then the ones we had bought a Applebees a few weeks before and they were so much cheaper than the 39 cents each that our applesbee was saying their special for super bowl was
    4) I learned to flour the chicken before dipping in sauce and then reflour for the extra crispy "breading" of the nuggets
    5) I learned if you chill or an hour after the flour, sauce, flour routine that the coating sticks better when it is friend.
    6) I learned you can fry in less oil then when you deep fry.

Any time that we watch something big on TV (with me and DH, it's usually a UFC fight night), we make all of our own snacks. I got a killer oven baked ribs recipe from an old co-worker of his, and as soon as I can dig it up, I'll post it around here.

I also make the best nachos anyone could ever have. It's true.

We strictly make chicken nuggets from scratch. There's so much crap in the store-bought ones that I seriously think people don't know what they're really putting into their bodies. So much fat, cholesterol, sodium and grossness in those things... yuck!

You can also bake your chicken wings and then warm up some NY style buffalo wing sauce by melting some butter into some Frank's Red Hot Sauce (although they do have the Buffalo Wing flavour now, I still like the old fashioned sauce.

We usually either bake everything that can be fried. I make homemade french fries by cutting up potatoes into 1/4 inch sticks and then coat them with olive oil and bake for 45 mins @ 475F.

I like your baked fry recipe . How do you get them crisp. Mine always turn out mushy. Maybe I don't cook them hot enough, Could that have been it?

More than likely, they weren't cooked on a high enough temperature. I usually cook mine on 475F and turn them once every 15 minutes. That gives them a chance to cook through and get brown. Just be sure to use enough oil to coat them all the way around.

For hot wings I do deep fry. About 15 minutes then toss and let sit about 3-4 minutes in Durkees and melted butter. Half and half.

I like chili on nachos with sour cream, shredded cheddar and finely diced tomatoes. Sometimes a little salsa.

i baked some hot wings a couple of months ago. i didn't bread them as i like the naked wings better than the breaded ones. once they were cooked through, i dipped them in melted butter/hot sauce, then put them back in the oven so it would bake the sauce on then dipped them again before eating. i lowered the oven temp a little bit for the second baking, but it did make a difference from the first batch i made.

You are right. The homemade is much better. We had homemade gumbo and the kids love it!

We have no desire to eat out because we can usually find a better recipe and can cook it for a fraction of the cost. Same thing for Valentines. We love rib eye for that day. We are going to feed 6 people for what 1 meal out would cost and it will taste a lot better! If we have time, I will even let my 10 y/o bake a dessert (he is a chef in the making - mmmmmm) and his desserts usually taste better than the restaurant's anyway.

I just thought you all should know that it is barely past breakfast and now I want hot wings!!!

We're doing the same for Valentine's this year, a filet mignon meal at our favorite place is about $24 for a 6oz steak (this does not include an appetizer or dessert). I purchased some gouda cheese, crackers, (already have olives), a pound of tenderloin, (already have bacon to wrap them for BF), (already have potatos and lettuce for salad), a quart of strawberries, Baker's dipping chocolate, and a bottle of wine for under the cost of one meal at that restaurant.

I'm all for "make it at home". And I'm sure it'll all taste better, too.

Sounds like a wonderful Valentine's Dinner. And you won't have a wait for a table time.
