interesting lunch at work
interesting lunch at work at work today. the way the paycheck falls this is one of those months where you have three weeks until we get paid instead of two. we get paid on the first.
my much younger colleagues were commiserating that they were out of money and groceries until the first. one was saying that he was living on protein powder and water until he got paid. i asked him if he had any eggs. he said no. i asked them how they were planning their shopping and meals for 21 days instead of 14 days. they looked at me as if i had three heads.
i told them about meal planning, freezing bread and milk, and planning for the 21 days of meals. they told me i was over organized. i kept my mouth shut that i have a kitchen full of food until payday.
oh well.11% gross to retirement
10% takehome to tithe and offerings
emergency fund maintained at 3000(works for me)
credit card debt 7500
mortgage free
freedom accounts/sinking funds that ebb and flow
then live on the rest!
i am trying something new. LDS church advises savings or debt repayment should be the same as the tithe. 10% each.

"over-organized". . . yet you're not the one living on protein powder and water! I'd have pointed that out to them.

Maybe they will be near death by tomorrow and they will think twice about the importance of being "over-organized"

Good for you...!!! It really does pay to have a plan and have a stockpile. These people need a copy of the story of the Grasshopper and the Ant: The Ant and the Grasshopper. Aesop. 1909-14. Fables. The Harvard Classics
I have $103.81 remaining unspent in my Price Book, where I keep my grocery money. I get $75 every two weeks (for 2 adults) for our food budget so I've spent $421.19 for groceries so far this year.
For 18-months I used $5-$10 each week specifically for food storage until I got my 3-layers of food storage in place. (That was when I had a $50/week food budget, which got reduced by 25% at the first of the year.)
3 Layers of Food Storage...
-72-hour emergency foods (food that doesn't require heating or refrigeration)
-6-12-months pantry foods (foods used for everyday food preparation)
-1-3 years long-term emergency foods (freeze-dried meat, veg. fruit, powdered milk-eggs-butter-peanut butter, coconut oil, grains, salt, seeds for sprouting, grains, beans, sweeteners, etc.....
It's possible to build a stockpile of food -- even on a strict budget. In these precarious times, it's more important than ever to make a conscious effort to do so.

The money spent on protein powder could have bought a weeks worth of real food.

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink! POSSIBLY a light bulb turned on in one of their heads and they will come around SOME DAY.

lol Maybe one of those young kids will come and ask how you still have lunches that don't mix with water.
There was a guy at DH's work that wasn't bringing much to eat. He replied no money for food right now, he was waiting for payday. He was on his iphone playing a game and chatting about the new game system he just bought!
I agree with a PP. I was stupid, but I doubt that stupid! lol

Some day they'll figure it out. They'll get this cool "new" idea that if they planned a little and had a budget.... and it will be something they thought of "on their own".

Guess this 3 week period was an unexpected surprise. What would they do if they're out of work for a month or got laid off? In this day & age anything can happen to even the most secure jobs.
For some reason I thought after everything that has been going on around us, that most were planning for just in case situations (whether its extra items like food or just saving more cash). See what happens when you hang out at FV, you get labeled as over organized! Well, maybe they can use their i-phone to distract us from the fact that they have no groceries! Nope, its not working.
May Groceries $238/250 Pet Supplies $111/125
Coupons $50.08
April Groceries $253/250 Pet Supplies $109/125
Coupons $34
Coupon Saving 2012 $165.61
2011 $376.25
