It shouldn't look like a thin rope. It should be applied on both sides of the glass and look like it's a triangle of putty wedged in between the glass and the wood.
If you could kick in the pants the person responsible for your problems, you wouldn't be able to sit for a month.

Did you know that a 4 year student paying $20,000/year who finances their education graduates with over $103,000 in debt to start? But a student who works and pays cash and takes 6 years to graduate ends with $6,300 in their pocket! So much for "getting a head start by financing!"

Correct. You'll never get a good seal with that rope caulk, especially without removing the old putty.

I'm currently caulking any seam I find anywhere. Especially if I can see daylight though it.

After it has thoroughly dried I will put up new plastic. I'm toying with a heavier plastic sold in the fabric section but I'm not sure if that is a good idea or not. Thus the thinking about it.

Do you know what thickness your current plastic is?

Go to Home Depot and get 6 mil or better. Or go to the window area and ask for the kind for windows.

Yeah any hardware store or whatever.

I just mean they'll have plastic sheeting intended for window protection - so you can be sure to get the recommended thickness. I just took a guess at 6 mil.

Thanks We are hoping all this works this year.

Just curious, can you picture my windows yet?

Very, very carefully remove the interior trim around the window. Use a utility knife to cut away caulk/paint along the edges (inside and outside edges of the trim) then use a small prybar to VERY CAREFULLY pull out the trim.

Put papers down on the floor around the window and have wet rags handy.

Get 1 can of "Great Stuff" for windows and doors and follow the directions and fill the gap between the window and the rough opening that will have been exposed with the great stuff.

    Let dry.

    Replace trim.

Enjoy your new weather sealed windows.
My DH did that last winter with our windows & we are now able to buy windows... this year. We, too, could feel the cold WIND blowing thru the window & under our covers (in our own bed ) It gave us a little extra time to get the windows done. Not perfect but MUCH MUCH better! Good luck!

    Happy Mama says:
Our Solution: A very wise couple told us to take the insulation from a new computer , cut it out and carefully remove the edges , fill with the cut Styrofoam insulation . Tada!!! Works like a charm, my kitchen is so much warmer now and I am a happy camper in the winter.

Ok, I'm trying to picture this but can't. Insulation from a new computer? What am I missing here?

I am finding this thread very helpful, by the way.
