heavensent, a loss leader is an item, or items a store sells at such a low price they lose money on it, but it's to get you in the store (and so that you think that everything else is cheap) ..and then bam you've spent 100$ when you only planned to get oranges at 39 cents that were the stores 'loss leader' that week
Ok that's the typical shopper, but we know better
We would be known as 'cherry pickers' for going to all the stores for only their loss leaders
I can't remember where I learned this, but online somewhere.

I learned it in school. They were always using the grocery store as an example for one thing or another.

I learned about a year and a half ago that junk mail is actually called Loss Leaders.

It NEVER occured to me to actually read those sale ads....and there were times we were so broke we NEEDED that Junk Mail and didn't even know it!
I heard about it on another forum...

Walking around stores as I shop I listen to the lingo & learn. End caps, action alley,BOGO. There really is a lot that goes into where they place items & how they market things to get you to buy. For instance, they put the milk way in the back so you have to walk through the store & hopefully buy something else along the way. Sneaky huh?
