Thumbs down The price of milk is CRAZY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have 4 kids (the 5th on the way) and we go thru a gallon a day because my kids get milk with every meal. Most grocery stores around here want 3.00 a gallon!!! I have to go to a few select stores to get milk. Sams and cvs will carry it for 2.00 and super walmart will carry it for about 2.30. These stores are really out of my way but I have to do it. Do you all freeze milk? I haven't tried this yet. What is the cost of milk for where you are? Amy

I know! I feel your pain...here milk runs $2.89 per gallon. Drives me nuts. I'm not sure about freezing it...I hope someone else will reply because I'd like to know the answer too.

I've never frozen milk, but have heard others do so successfully. You have to pour a little out of the carton first though to leave room for expansion.hth.
    I paid $2.41 yesterday & it's $1.99 on sale.

I don't do it but many have success with buying whole milk and mixing 1/2 and 1/2 with dry milk, then it is about 2-1% style milk.

    Just another idea!

It's $1.99 here regularly at many stores, but can be much higher depending on the store.

it's 2.99 for store brand milk. i buy whichever brand is cheapest between 3 brands. sometimes there is a sale and hood is cheaper than shaw's brand. when big y has a milk sale it's usually around 1.98 for a gallon so we go over there and stock up on it. i have frozen milk when i get a good deal and i have the room in teh freezer. pour out about a cup or a little more of the milk then put it in the freezer. i wait for it to freeze before putting the lid on. it takes a while for it to thaw in the firdge so you need to plan ahead. it takes about 2 days or so for it to thaw in my fridge. freezing it doesn't change the taste any.

I freeze milk, I don't leave any room for expansion either, make sure to shake it really well because it seperates. This may seem like a strange question but why do they drink so much milk? The average child only needs 800mgs a day. 16oz. a day of milk alone will meet the calcium requirement for babies and children. If you are vegetarian and use milk as a protein source it's understandable, but if they are eating other forms of dairy etc. for calcium like broccoli, cheese, beabs, salmon, they might not need to drink milk with every meal. One less glass of moo juice might be helpful on the pocketbook if they are meeting these other requirements. Just a tip. BTW-milk costs 2.99 a gallon here but I get it at Costco for 1.79.

I freeze it as well. You do have to shake it, as other have posted.
Milk here goes for anywhere from 2.00 to 3.50. Fortunately I have a number of grocery stores near me and I can usually get it when it is on sale.
