Yes, Mel Bartholomew is the author. The soil is the reason I think our garden has been so awful the last few years. His mix calls for coarse vermiculite, peat moss and compost. And because you never mix it with your soil (I mean my awful soil that has been added to for 20 years and is still not great) you don't have to change it every year. Thanks for all of your input. Can you send me some of your soil? LOL

Well our soil here in Regina is the pits compared to north of Calgary! This is clay, and we have far too many tree roots for a decent garden. BUT, on the positive side, we do have nice big healthy trees!!!

Craftypam: I know someone within a half hour of you and this is what they had to say about gardening (they do a LOT!).

"Okay, most soil in this area is alkali (heavy on the potash/potassium and some lime --- anyway, high ph). So, well-rotted compost or manure is good, but sheep manure or rabbit straw is better than steer manure.

Some older folk used to use horse manure in their hotbeds in the spring; it heats up best (think: mushroom farms).

Also, peat moss, leaf mulch, grass clippings, pine needles etc. are all good --- adds fibre and acidity.

We used to use compost and rabbit straw when we had rabbits. Since then we've continued to use compost, and we add any of the items from the previous paragraph whenever available. However, in a wet year (like recent ones) I'd also recommend raised beds, and probably the addition of sandy soil for increased drainage. "

    Hope that helps you!

Went to Wal Mart today for a few things I get there. Started to get milk and it had went up 50 cents gallon. Eggs were $2.19 large dozen. Said nope, and was going to stop at Aldis but tired and drove on by. Have to go to that town Monday to the doctor anyway. Unless Aldis has went up milk is $2.19 and medium eggs are $1.19.

Colorado, which is another reason I was so shocked. I'd also never seen such a large display, it made me wonder if they accidentally ordered too many.

I haven't read the whole thread, but after my shopping trip yesterday, at one of our most reasonably priced stores, it looks like salad is almost a thing of the past. Salad type produce was shocking, even for the time of year. I still bought romaine, a bell pepper, shredded carrots (I expect to pay a premium for those) and a few Roma tomatoes. But yikes!

At least they had a good unadvertised sale on frozen veggies, and frozen bs chicken breats for 4.77/3 pb bag, as good as we ever get around here. I did some stocking up while I could.

Making bierocks (rolls filled with cabbage and beef) Love to freeze them and pop them out for a quick lunch.

It would be a good time to make coleslaw .

I hadn't thought about roasting the cabbage. Thanks for the idea.

It is yummy. I just cut it into wedges and add a drizzle of olive oil salt, pepper. Yum!

Bananas were .99 a pound at our little local store this morning! I have always depended on apples and bananas as being staples here but not at that price!
