    Default What kind of crazy prices are you seeing at the grocery store?

    Yesterday I saw a couple that made me do a double take:

    * Zuchini $2.79 per pound
    * tomatoes $2.99 per pound

    I've seen things here as high as $4.99 a pound in the last month or so, tomatoes, asparagus, broccoli, normal things. But it's February and I expect produce to be expensive. On the other hand I can always find something else at a reasonable rate. For example, lettuce and bagged salads have been $1 the last two weeks in a row.

    I expect by summer we'll be back to tomatoes and squash under $1 a pound as the markets glut with seasonal produce.

    I haven't seen really high prices but I have seen items not in the store, especially produce.

    One grocery store just doesn't have colored peppers it has some green ones but no yellow, red, or orange. They know they won't be able to sell them here for the higher price so they just didn't purchase any.

    What I have seen high priced is Watermelon $6 each. I was like, What watermelon already? We use to eat watermelon for my father's birthday because that was the first time they had been available and ripe. And that was in the beginning of July.

    It's not surprising at all to see higher prices on fresh produce, given the cold weather farther south than normal in the entire USA, and also various crop failures due to weather globally.

    We're trying to avoid produce not grown in the US, so that makes things even harder.

    Grass fed butter. I buy butter (read lots...lol) when it is on sale and put in freezer, or make my own when I get fantastic cream. But now that I am needing a good sale again or just be willing to pay the price for my favorite the KerryGold. sigh..... just regular butter has gone high lately.

    I love love love my magic freezer....lol I grew and bought so much produce this summer and froze, can and dehydrated that the prices at the grocery store shock me lately....lol But then again like we all know most of our produce and things come from elsewhere this time of yr. and with the freeze in Mexico it will be high. I am glad Spring and growing season is coming.

    I did find some great produce prices this week though with some lettuce, cabbage, apples and mandarins as well as a case of California Navels. But pepper prices were crazy high here. I love roasted peppers and keep counting my stash.....getting down to the end.....sigh

    The crazy prices I saw this week were in the other direction. I stopped at a small country store on Sunday and they had 3lb bags of apples on for .99 per bag. That is the absolute lowest price I can ever remember seeing, even better than when there is a surplus in the fall. And they were actually good, not half rotten like at the grocery store.

    If this weather pattern does not change, it'll be a cold summer too.

    The Aldi by my house just has crazy prices.
    Gallon of milk .99
    Dozen Eggs .49
    Pkg of white mushrooms .59
    Pkg of red, yellow, orange peppers $1.99
    Loaf of bread .99

    My regular grocery store (Target) is like any other place, prices slowly on the rise. I just buy less and cook with fewer ingredients (I'm a foodie and like to make complicated recipes with lots of ingredients and spices, but I'm learning to cook more simple meals). I buy far less snack foods. The dogs gave up their cottage cheese and yogurt, which I used to add to their dry food for extra flavor. No more soda with every meal (which was bad anyway, even if it was diet).

    Zucchini was $2.99/lb. I've never ever seen it that high before.

    Aldi had a sign about bad weather and shortage of produce. They didn't have a whole lot. That was last week. I haven't checked this week.

    OOwl,

    I make my own yogurt and cottage cheese and saves me. I don't know about your milk prices and whether it would save you or not. I do buy all my spices in bulk from a Co-op or the Amish, I do know even several places on line have good prices don't know if that would save you or not.

    This morning iceberg lettuce was 2.39; tomatoes 2.79 lb and a 16 oz. bag of pasta was $1 ON SALE. A 10 lb. bag of rice was 5.99 ON SALE. Green Bell Peppers were 1.79 each. White Wheat bread is 2.99 per loaf. Needless to say, no salads.

    Wow, those are crazy good! We don't have Aldi's here

    My Kroger had a 3 pack of peppers yesterday for $4.99. It's like they think if the bundle it up as a package we don't realize it's $1.67 per pepper.
