    Default Apple Sticker Shock

I stopped by Safeway today to grab my .99 pinapples while I was there I was going to grab a couple apples for my DS since we are out (and he LOVES apples).... The CHEAPEST apples were $1.99 per pound . What??? The only other apples they had were $2.99 per pound. Guess we are sticking with the pineapple!

It's not exactly apple season in N. America. But give it a week or two, I notice there seems to be a different fruit on sale each week at the supermarket. This week our special is on bananas.

Bananas here also. Apples are never cheap here. As for the pineapples...cut the top off and plant...you can harvest one pineapple out of it...rinse and repeat. Nice looking plant also. When we get to where we'll be living I want to plant a few. Understand they take a little room tho.

I used to get apples for $.69/lb but the best price I've seen in years, for IN SEASON apples is $1.69/lb. Usually $1.99 here too. Today I bought 4 apples for $2 at the farmers market. Seems like a steal now!

We have a produce market that sells their apples for .59 a pound....and they're still crispy....I guess we're lucky!

This is why we put in two apple trees this year. Hopefully they will do well.

Unless the Safeway produce is on a sale I NEVER buy other produce there..........too high.

I saw some Braeburn today for .89. But end of apple season now so the $ is really getting high.........so have to wait until the one or two summer apples come on. (just had a grower tell me about a week ago that there WAS such a thing...didn't know)

Seems to be bananas, lemons, and pineapple right now.

NEVER buy apples at a supermarket if you can help it. You could just about afford to drive 40 miles to get a bushel at a time. Do a search for produce markets or farmers' markets. $2/lb is around $100 a bushel. You should be able to get a bushel for $20-25 out of season. If a bushel is too much to use up as fresh...can or freeze applesauce, freeze some pies, dehydrate them, juice them.

lparker: Great idea! But there are no apple farmers within 500 miles of us. But our prices haven't been too bad. I pick up 6 lbs. of Gala apples for $4.99CDN. Works out to 83 cents a pound. Higher than summer for sure, but these are GALA apples, which normally are the most expensive here. For some reason they're cheap now.
