Visa increases the amount of the hold gas pumps are allowed to place on cards
As of June 18 Visa raised allowed hold by gas pumps from $75 to $125. The time of hold is still up to 72 hours.
Visa has allowed $75 hold since 2008. With gas prices above $3.00 a gallon, $75 did not always fill the tank anymore and pumps were shutting off before larger vehicles were fully fueled. In response, Visa has raised the maximum purchase from $75 to $125. Therefore, your account may have a $125 hold for pay at the pump purchases."Everyday as your walking down the street, everybody that you met has an original point of view" -Arthur PBS

yep, just had a friend from work get messed up on her visa when they did a $75 hold and the gas station didn't tell her. She called them and they said the money was a hold and she argued that 1) she was not aware of the hold policy and 2) her care doesn't even hold $40 in gas. she was p.o.ed!! Needless to say the gas station went ahead and put the money back in her account.

It always goes back into your account (it actually doesn't leave) it is just a hold and it has to leave your account within 72 hours now instead of the $75 they can do $125.
Of course the range of amounts gas stations put on hold ranges for $1 to the new $125. You juts don't know which ones it is unless you know the station and it's policies well.
You can avoid the hold by going in and paying not paying at the pump."Everyday as your walking down the street, everybody that you met has an original point of view" -Arthur PBS

Many stations here have their hold policy on a little plaque on the pump.

That's where the envelope system and paying with cash comes in handy. No need to worry about what's available via the card. You have it in hand and you know how much you are spending.

I wouldn't knowingly go to a gas station that puts a hold like that on your account. I thought the amount was up to your bank, not the gas station.
You can avoid the hold if you use a PIN number. It debits the exact amount from your account immediately.~Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.~

Bank have no say what so ever.
Visa not the issuing bank but Visa sets the max amount and the gas station gets to choose how much up to that amount.
Many people don't know they get a hold on their card as it is off before they know it was there. Only those that check daily and check pending charges not just those that have cleared or run into low account troubles tend to know about the hold .
My mom has been going to one station at the grocery store Kroger that has the max $75 dollar hold one for years and she didn't even know she went to one that does that.
One time I was just topping off my tank, gas was cheaper in her town before I drove home. I didn't have $75 in my account so the card got denied. I was able to get gas by pre- paying at the window."Everyday as your walking down the street, everybody that you met has an original point of view" -Arthur PBS

I did a quick google and I read that it's the bigger gas companies (BP, Chevron, etc) that determines the hold, not the owner of the gas station. I go to the base exchange when I can to get gas so it's kind of a nonissue for me, but if I were buying gas out in town I'd find the brands that don't place big holds.

"Will debit card preauthorization holds apply to all my purchases?
No, they only apply to debit card purchases when you sign your name or do not enter a PIN. Debit purchases and ATM withdrawals made using a PIN subtract the funds immediately from your account, thereby reflecting an accurate available balance."
"Exception: When using your PIN at a fuel dispenser, the merchant may still send a preauthorization request."

I have never had my bank hold more than $1. I guess I will use cash and my gas card from now on.

That would explain why my card was declined when I only had $88 in checking yesterday. When I was in the bay the other week a gas station put $100 hold on my debit card, I had only ever seen a dollar.

I work for a gas station for over 4 years, we DO NOT withhold any money from you when you use your card it is your bank. I have been screamed at and cussed at because BANKS DON'T WANT TO TAKE THE BLAME SO THEY PLACE THE BLAME ON THE GAS STATIONS. When one person asked to talk to the manager about that she told them the same thing (the bank told them it was us), there is no way that we can take any money from someone's card, if this problem happens at the pump the way to get around it is to go inside the gas station and tell them you want say $45 on pump 2, and you want them to do credit, this is the way to avoid the penalty.
If you really press your bank like we had the customers do they finally told the customer that it was not the gas station but the bank instead. They want us to take the blame when it is not us.
It is
Sorry

I work at a gas station to avoid penalties, go into the gas station and tell them how much you need in gas, or some places like Exxon you give them your card or licensefor them to hold then fill up then come back then run your card. I have a Visa card and have not had this problem.

I am sorry for my rant last night, but it does upset me, especially when the customer comes in and starts screaming at me when it is not my fault.
