Frugal cell.phone
Most people think that cellphones are a luxury. For me it's a necessity and I'll explain why.
I live alone and on a very minimal and fixed income. I am gone from home a lot and decided that I would cut all non-essentials... including cable, internet and landline phone service. Since I already had a basic prepaid cellphone (although I wasn't 100% happy with their service). I decided to upgrade my service and actually am getting a better deal now.
I switched to Straight Talk. I for online to possible find a cheap used phone on ebay and when I googled, I realized they had a website. I got on their website and found they have refurbished phones for sale with the purchase of a service card ($30 for 1000 minutes/1000 texts or $45 unlimited minutes/texts/internet) you can get a refurbished LG phone for FREE!! I got a phone with a $30 service card plus tax, shipped to my door via FedEx Ground (the shipping was free and is available for a limited time) for $32.40!!!!!!!!
Service has been good (I had service when many others didn't have service due to the April storms here in Alabama), the phone is just a basic flip phone, nothing fancy-schmancy stuff and works like it were new, Now I'm thinking about upgrading to a QWERTY phone so I can text and email more efficiently (since I don't have internet at home but I have it at work). For $20 you can get a refurbished Samsung QWERTY phone on their website (basically the same one they are selling right now at Walmart in their add for almost $60). So final cost for the phone and one month's service on the refurbished phone would be equal to the new phone from Walmart!! The question you have to ask yourself is.... is it worth it to save $40 difference in the new versus refurbished phone? It is for me since for $5 more I can get a phone another month's service !!

Kim you said you are on a fixed income, do you get a medicaid card, help from the state for utilities or food stamps, if so, you are eligible for a free cell phone from the state, we have one that gives us 250 minutes free a month, check with the local DHHS office.
