Not where we live. DS's school starts the 2nd week of August and DD's college move-in day is six days later. The public schools in our area start in that general time frame as well. Less than a month away.

    I don't do normal.

We do a monthly teacher gift. The first school day of each month, we send in a teacher gift.

I try to keep it simple, or homemade.

Over the course of the school year, we learn more about what they like or don't like. It'll be the first month or two that are difficult to come up with something.

I haven't picked up much, yet...watching for supplies that are bargains. I've gotten 2 packs of glue sticks for 20 cents each.

Just got a pack of papermate pens for FREE at Target (they have a $1/off coupon and the basic pens are on sale for $1 this week).

I'm still in college...needing pencil lead, filler paper, and actually need to pick up 2 more 1.5" binders this time (I try to make my binders last 2-3 semesters).

Other than that, I tend to pick up any supplies we may use that are in the super-cheap/nearly free category. I figure it can't hurt...and it's not like they go bad.

So when Little Miss asked for the sparkle I could not resist saying yes and we spurged. The difference was about the price of a discount soda but I am sure the joy will last longer
I have the same memories of my mom letting me get the cute school supplies!! Puppy folders, flower pencils, teeny cute shaped erasers, glitter ruler... Those extra cents will DEFINITELY pay off!!
