Angel, I had some alfalfa seeds once I tried to sprout and they wouldn't do a thing. I have no idea what I was doing wrong. The only thing I could think of is this house is too cold in winter for them to sprout. But that seems real weird. I've never had sprouting problems in any other houses I've lived in. Just this one. Course plants are a problem period in this house. Nothing wants to grow. I finally managed to get a spider plant, draceana, cactus, and Christmas cactus to grow. But that's it.
I'd love to get into more sprouting! Where can I be sure to get good seed? And what seed is a 'no-fail' one to start with? (ETA:
I better read the whole post before answering next time! I'll check out Handy Pantry.
ETA again...they don't ship the seeds outside the US.

Peanut,
I have gotten mine from both over the years. But lately from :
Organic 5 Part Salad Sprouting Seed Mix or my co-op now can order them and is carrying the brand which is great.
Sorry to hear you had trouble with sprouting. I wonder like you said if it is just too cold maybe?
I do put a drop of oil of oregano oil or grapefruit seed extract to prevent contamination.
Here is another good site for information on how to sprout :
http://sproutpeople.org/
Wasn't sure if I should put a link where to get, hopefully won't be a problem.
Hugs to you.Last edited by HappyMama; 11-11-2011 at 06:26 PM. Reason: added site

Sorry Peanut just saw they don't ship outside of US.
Here is the company I get from sometimes, I looked and they have a shop on ebay:
35 LBS - ORGANIC ALFALFA SEEDS-SPROUTS SPROUTING SEED | eBay
Not the mix I get but maybe they could help if you are ever interested again. Hope we can figure a way to get sprouts to work for you , if you want to try someday again.*Angel*

Added 6 bags of old bananas to the freezer today. It's got to be full now. Bananas were half price today.

Still dehydrating bok choy and apples.
I used to do a lot of sprouting but got afraid of salmonella. I had read or heard that the seeds could be contaminated and then when you soaked them, the bacteria would grow. I read about rinsing them with chlorine bleach but didn't know if that would work and nobody was able to give me an answer that satisfied me!

So my DD and I were 'talking' about food dehydrators on Facebook yesterday... What sorts of foods do you dehydrate Angel? (and anyone else)

Hmmm...lots of scope for food preservation there. How big a dehydrator is going to be enough for just DH and I? I'm looking at the Excalibur ones.
