    Default One man's trash.....

    Is my culinary treasure!!
My DH works 2 other jobs on his days off from the firehouse (bless his soul!) and one of those jobs is head of maintenance at a prominent hotel chain. The hotel serves breakfast every morning and also offers fresh fruit throughout the day. Yesterday they were going to throw out a whole bunch of pears because they were starting to bruise and attract fruit flies. DH threw them in a bag and brought them home, knowing how much I LOATHE food waste. Today I have 3 pints and 2 half pints of spiced pear butter in the canner. Just had to share!

First, let me say that spiced pear butter sounds friggin' amazing.

But aren't you afraid about bacteria and things like that from the point of view that you don't know how long the hotel has let that stuff sit out?

I'd be interested to know what (in the spiced pear butter making process) might help remedy that.

In order to make fruit butters, the fruits are cooked, so that would take care of a lot of germs just like cooking any other foods. Any bad spots are removed before processing, too, so only unspoiled fruit ends up being used.

Yum that stuff is so good. Very expensive to buy and you got the fruit for free . Great job. Have a bite or 2 for us at the Village. Yummy

    House smelled so good!!

DH knows how/where the food is kept there so he's pretty good about only bringing home what's safe. One time he brought home a half case of bacon as they ordered the wrong kind and were going to throw it out!! This is why I encourage him to remain at this job...it has lots of perks including very low priced hotel rooms when we travel!!!

As Spirit Deer said, the fruit is washed and cooked so no worries there. No different then buying it from the supermarket where who knows who has been touching that fruit!!

I think today he said that the bananas will probably get pulled. That means banana bread and banana spice cake at my house!!!!

Yes! I cut them up in chunks, then freeze. My kids eat them for snack like that...they taste like frozen banana custard!! Also use the frozen chunks in smoothies!! Love it!!!

You got that right! WTG on all your 'treasure'. I'm enjoying zucchini and rhubarb 'treasures' from other people. Plus a friend who keeps bringing garden produce for us.

Definitely some resourceful folks on here. I think being resourceful is the key to getting out of (and staying out of) debt.

Unfortunately, and despite living slightly in the country in Kentucky, our weakness is in the food area. We don't have kids, so it is easy to just eat out. We're just not forced to get creative in this area.

Everything else we're pretty good about.
