I live in Texas and we are dominated by a grocery store chain called HEB.

I recently learned that if you find something expired at the store if you bring the expired item and a new one to the register, you get the new one free.

    Wow on a Monday morning.

6 boxes of cereal (5 will go to the food pantry because we don't eat that much)
3 packages of bacon (giving to my neighbors because we don't eat pork)
    8 yogurts
    2 Horizon milk half gallons
    3 heads of hydroponic lettuce
2 bags of cat food for the animal shelter
2 packages of turkey Italian sausage
    3 whole chickens
2 containers of cut up melon
2 loaves of Italian garlic bread
    4 bottles of agave nectar
3 containers of whack em biscuits
    1 package of tortillas

I sorta felt guilt getting so much for free, but they are the ones who had the expired stuff

Don't feel bad. It's their policy. DH would love a place like that...he's always giving the store their expired stuff from their shelves.

    Way to go!!!

That's very cool. You got a great haul. I wonder if any other stores have the same policy.

A bit unrelated, but one thing that I like at our one Kroger (We don't typically shop there.) is that the bagged salad goes on deep discount when it's close to expiration. I eat so much salad, that it's nice to have it bagged and have it come out cheaper than buying all the individual produce and cutting it myself. The only problem being that it has to be eaten that day or the very next, so I can't buy much of it.

Don't feel bad. It is their policy. You were just the one finding the expired stuff. It is probably cheaper for them to do it that way than to have employees dig through stuff.

Our Fred Meyers (our Krogers out here) does that also with the salads.

Awesome! I would be all over that! Every time I went into the store, I would be on the look out for the expired stuff! Way to go!
