Saw this earlier today too The increase applies to both Canada & US memberships and is only increasing about $5-$10/yr if I recall correctly depending on membership type. I'm glad its only a small increase but sad that its an increase. I just hope they stay consistent with their quality and pricing.

I love Costco and all their Vegetarian goodies, but I already planned not to renew my membership next year for a few reason. So this seals if for me for sure.

Keep in mind that you can get 2 cards (with 2 separate names) with every membership, so it's a perfect thing to share with someone else. I split mine with a friend's daughter.

I'm not surprised to read that it's going up in price - what isn't? - but what surprised me is where the article says:

the warehouse store chain isn't doing as well as it had hoped
Granted, I don't know what they "had hoped" but if Costco isn't doing well... yeesh. I thought they were one of the most profitable business around.

Do you not have to prove that you live in the same household? You can't do that at Costco here unless you both have a drivers license with the same address.

In the US you don't. My friend bought the membership for her daughter and put us each down on the account (I paid her later for my half). Then, the next time I went to Costco, I went to the membership desk and told them I had a new membership, was sharing with someone, and I needed a new card. They took my picture and that was that.

Now, Costco may start cracking down on this in an effort to make more money, but so far, sharing among 2 different households is still fine.

We only have Sams Club here. I have never gotten a member card, but I can buy eyeglasses and contacts there at the optical dept without a membership. Can also use the pharmacy without a membership. Sometimes I'd go there with a friend who has a card and buy a few things.

The company I work at now has a SC member card and I can use it anytime I want (I have to pay in cash) and we have been getting a few more things there.

I have a membership from when I worked for my sister and brother-in-law. They sold the business and although I am still in management working for the new owner, my membership is still through my sister. I think the next time it is up for renewal I will opt out. I only go once in awhile and rarely buy food now that it is just me at home.

I 'heard' that they started cracking down on any totally new memberships here.........but the ones already doing it were okay.

This might explain part of the increase in $.........

    October 12, 2011 12:02 p.m. - Updated: 12:04 p.m.
OLYMPIA — Costco has given nearly $10 million to support an initiative campaign that would privatize Washington’s liquor distribution and sales.

New finance reports filed with the state Public Disclosure Commission show Costco giving an additional $2.8 million to the cause last week, bringing their total to over $9.6 million.

This is the second year in a row that Costco has spent millions on a liquor privatization initiative. Last year’s measure failed, but supporters are returning to the ballot this November with a plan that includes new restrictions as well as revenues for government.

They must see it as a potential gold mine to be putting out that kind of money............not sure it will pass this year either.........the shareholders could get mad!!!
