~Eating out of the freezer this month and just picking up perishables. I went way over budget last month. Some was stocking up on sales but most was just increases for staples. Hoping to spend less than $200 this month. That means I haven't restocked the usual hot dogs and ice cream when we ran out 2 weeks ago. They're the kids' favorites. There's been a lot of peanut butter sandwiches around here lately. But now my peanut butter is almost gone. *sigh*
Luckily a few weeks ago my BIL(who is a grocery vendor)made friends with a baking vendor and is getting pallets of just expired baked goods. He's passed along 12 loaves of whole grain and specialty breads, 2 packs of bagels, and 8 bags of crackers and cookies to us over the last month. It's been wonderful!~~Constance

I actually went to the butcher's today for meat. I checked the grocery stores and what they had was really fatty. The price was not much different than the butcher's. In fact, the butcher had cheaper ground beef by 50 cents a pound! We walked out with 4.5 lbs. pork chops, 2 lbs. ground, and 1 lb. breakfast sausages...for $30. Still an horrendous price.

Yup:
1. Purchase spinach for salads instead of lettuce. Unless lettuce is marked down to $1. Wilt leftover or not-appetizing spinach in microwave and freeze. Easy to use in pizza, quichee and lasagna.
2. Cook up meat fat and grissle for dogs by boiling in a little water in microwave. Add another quarter cup of water, allow to cool and pour over dry food instead of using a little canned food.

I just renewed our Sams club membership and I compare with a calculator (yes I take a small one with me) and do some calculations and sometimes they are cheaper then Krogers, and Aldi's.
Krogers markdown prices are what the old prices used to be. Riesbecks is cheaper.

They actually put SOMETHING I BUY on sale at the supermarket! That almost never happens. They almost always put the name brands on sale, but I don't buy those.
Well for two days (Mon & Tues) they had the store brand bread on sale for €1/loaf, and all beer and wine was 20% off. So I bought 4 loaves of bread (these are huge loaves, couldn't fit more than that in the freezer) and a box of wine - 4 liters for €6. I use the wine in cooking and it's in the box with the bag that drains/deflates from the bottom, which means it pretty much never goes bad and doesn't need to be refrigerated. I buy this wine anyway, it's usually over €7. So that was great.
But eggs went up in price
. That is bad for us because eggs are the only pure animal protein that we get in our diets now. We can't afford meat or fish. There is animal protein in cheese and we eat some cheese, so it's not the end of the world - and the eggs are still within reach, but it upset me to see that the price went up, at a time when we were hoping to see more prices come DOWN. (Keep dreaming, right?)

Luckybustert: I hear you. I've been ordered to eat less fat, but more protein. That means more fish, beans, eggs, etc. However, when I show my dietitian the bean meals, she says there's not enough protein in them and I need to have a chicken breast or something with it. I just can't afford all this protein! My heart can't either. My cholesterol is up again. 'Nuf said. Dietitian be hanged.

Peanut, there is plenty of protein in beans. Your dietitian is way off base. Do your own research on this. The average person in a Western nation gets way too much protein.
