I agree and buy grassfed as well, but majority sold in all supermarkets etc is grain fed. So not only grain prices have soared but with drought many did not have the hay or resources to continue to feed their herds and that is why they went to auction.

It's not completely renewable if one of the largest suppliers in the country doesn't have the grass to feed them for months. Most ranchers cannot afford to solely feed them on corn.

Unless your state that supplies a great deal of the beef has a record setting drought combined with fires which makes grass not available as a real source of feeding in at least 50% of the state.

My DH brought this up to me a few weeks ago Not the best news for our budget that's for sure. I bought round steak for $1.99 a pound a few weeks back. An unheard of crazy price so I bought as much as I had money for. Divided it all up in 1 pound packs and stuck in the freezer. So glad I did because the cost of beef hasn't been under $5.79 since then.

Keep sharing HappyMama! It helps me to make wise choices with my food dollars. Knowledge is power! I know I've said this before, but it bears repeating, without you sharing your system of building and keeping a deep food pantry my family would have some very hungry days ahead. We were literally on the brink. My food budget can not increase no matter what the market does. I must spend every dollar with forethought, and there is no panic in the presence of wisdom. Thank you for sharing with us.

that explains why beef has been on sale repeatedly at Food Lion.

I am sure they will inject the cows to make them grow faster. Yuck.....the thought of that makes me sick!!!

Thanks Happymama for sharing! WE LOVE beef in our household! It is the preferred meat of all of us. There have been tons of chicken sales. Boy are my kids griping about so much chicken.

A store advertised 10 lb rolls at 1.99 a lb this week. I plan to buy at least 50 lbs. It will work out great if dh gets a few deer to mix with it! Thanks for the heads up!

We are serioysly contemplating buying beef calves next spring .

That's a great price! Which store? I'm hoping since we are both from Wisconsin I will have the store around here. We are pretty limited, though.

Thank you for the info. Unfortunately, there are none close by. I have to shop in the Stevens Point or Marshfield areas, since our local County Market closed 8 or 9 years ago. Oh well, I will keep looking!

For almost as long as I can remember, we have bought the vast majority of our beef from either family, friends or friends-of-friends who actually raised them grassfed on small farms. You get SIGNIFICANTLY better quality beef, usually much cheaper, and you are putting money in the hands of the good folks doing the actual work, rather than the countless middlemen along the way.

If this is an option for any of you, I whole-heartedly recommend that you try to find a small-operation local farmer and support them.

She was speaking past tense about the relatively cheap cost of beef. I don't expect that cost to stay as cheap, although I'm not expecting a very dramatic rise in price for the beef I buy.
