For anyone who has ever watched Til Debt to us part and wondered how much to put in the jars a week this is a great online forum that you can print out.
I came across that show just tonight, and I was wondering what the host was talking about when she mentioned the jars. Thanks for posting this. I can't wait to get over to there and get my answer.
I've been using Gail's system for a few years now. We've whittled down what we put in the jars so we have lots for savings. It kind of works. But jars are hard to carry in your purse. Our downfall is still the debit card. She has people cut up their credit cards for a reason. They're a temptation when there's no money in the jars!
I came across this system about a year ago and it really helped me break down my spending and manage my budget. I had been doing the Dave Ramsey envelope system but it didn't really work for me because I didn't know how much to put in the envelopes and I started with too many envelopes, which gave me a headache. After using Gail's calculator I was able to decide how much to put in the envelopes and how many envelopes to have.
Envelopes (or jars) don't really work for me, but I write down a budget on paper and track my spending on Mint.com.
Peanut, would it be easier if you took the money from the jar and put in into an envelope to carry in your purse? You could even make cloth envelopes which last longer and look nicer than paper. Etsy has some great ones.
Waterbaby77: we used to use envelopes, but then the money was too liquid and easy for me to spend. At least in the jars I have to go to effort to get the money and keep it all separate in my purse.
Right now my challenge with the jars is to keep from robbing Peter to pay Paul. I don't want to switch from jar to jar to get enough funds because I messed up my budgeting. And I don't want to use my credit cards or debit cards. My goal is no credit card or debit expenditures in December.
oh wow and I can download the spreadsheet, it will still do the calculating for me YAY! Ok I may switch to this one instead of mine as it shows percentages and is really easy to read. I'll keep mine as a register and snowball tracker but use this for the overall At a Glance use each month.
Lady V: it is aimed at Canadians, so it might be suited to the American scenario. I'll PM you...
