I don't mean to laugh, but this post just brought back memories. I grew up really poor and my mom used to wash clothes with dishsoap.....using a toilet plunger (clean of course!) in the bathtub! I don't have any tips, but thanks for bringing back a funny memory.

If you keep a few bars of Fels-Naptha soap in the cupboard just in case, it will substitute for store bought detergent. Just wet your clothing and get a good lather going on each piece, then pop in the washer. Works for stain removal too. Just scrub stained part of clothing with bar of soap. Best stain remover I've ever used.

Mom used to grate Ivory soap to wash baby things. For the rest of the wash she grated some brown bar soap. We didn't have a machine; Mom washed in a big granite tub.

I really love all the ideas...
like i said...January is going to be a very very hard month....I will have never experience this type of hardship before because in the past i would say...lets skip this bill just until....but robbing peter to pay paul is what has gotten me into this mess and it has to stop now....so that being said....I have enough ivory to last me three years...haha and enough toothpaste to get me through a year...and vinegar for cleaning etc....but other than that it is going to be tough...I have enough laundry soap tide....which i can water down to get through but that is why i started this thread because i so plan to carry on the saving method from january into subsequent months so that i can pay down these stupid bills and get back on track...

I've not used the search function, but there are posts from the past with laundry soap recipes both powered and liquid. I hope that someone is able to point you in the direction to locate them.
I am sure that a google search would bring up some solutions too.

I always tried to avoid this one as I was raised in that situation...washing hair with dish soap, socks for menstrual pads, Sears TP, baking soda toothpaste, dish soap laundry detergent. I learned to be a resourceful kid and substitute. Dad always had his stuff and we had to wait until the next time Mother went shopping.
Dish soap can be used in a washing machine. You don't want to use much as the suds will start to come out of the machine. You will have to use a garden hose to rinse everything out or move it to the bathtub.
My solution: Walmart is 5 miles and really not that cheap. Local grocery closes at 10pm; gas station is 24/7 but 4x the price.
Stock up on toiletries, cleaning, pet supplies, non-perishable basics as soon as I get paid and put them in a closet. This closet is 'the store'. After a while, I have a good idea of how much stuff I will use in a month and just do a list towards the end of the month before shopping. I'm getting most stuff from Dollar Store or Aldis which beat Walmart's prices most of the time.
The local Walmart was 30 lanes and only four (max) open most of the time even during rush hour and evenings. I try to avoid it.

hi thanks so much....haha
wow....i read your post and saw where socks as maxi pads...I mean if i really really had to i would but not there are the time being....with coupons i can get this fairly cheap....i am hoping to be done with that soon anyhow.....doc says i am on my way and i am thrilled.....but i understand that dish soap can be used for anything....but with a coupon i can get a bottle of suave shampoo for .50 which is fine for me but my middle son needs the dandruff shampoo....not the head and shoulder kind but the selson blue kind and sometimes stronger...so if anyone has any ideas on how to manage dandruff cheaper it would be appreciated....thanks for all the ideas.....i am making my list right now...

he has tried vinegar and baking soda...
and it doesnt work for him....He gets realy bad dandruff and we had to get a prescription once for the t gel but that has run out...and the co pay on that is still pretty expensive more expensive than the store brand selson blue and at this time it has been working but that cost us 3.99 a month....haha....I know not alot of money but my goal is to be able to figure out something cheaper...it may not be possible but i was thinking of taking the store brand selson blue and adding a bottle of suave shampoo to it making more and maybe stretching it further or do you think it would make the store brand selson blue shampoo not work.....thus making me lose money because i have to go and buy another bottle...
