:listenid you know that if you live in NC and get Food Stamps you can get a waiver for fishing licenses? I just got one for both me and my husband. Good for a year. It is for both inland and coastal fishing. It doesn''t include trout waters but everything else. It will save us depending if we decide we want to go trout fishing--either $70 or if we buy the $10 trout license $50 this year. I am happy with that. :smball:
I love that idea!!! Not only does it encourage self-sufficiency (would be even better if they could find an experienced fisherman to teach the basics of casting, catching, and cleaning) but it encourages people to get out into the fresh air. So much of the poverty cycle is hidden indoors now. This is a healthy outdoor activity, mild exercise that even someone with moderate disabilities can do and enjoy, and can get people and their children out of the house.
I think it's interesting that they charge for the trout stamp, though. Here in Maryland that's an additional fee over the basic license, as well. I wonder it that has something to do with the states' stocking programs and expenses?
Does NC require people to register their "harvest?" In Maryland, you're supposed to log anything you catch, which they use in magic calculations to figure out the numbers and value of the annual catches. Most people do that on the internet, though I *THINK* it's still possible to do it at certain bait stores that sell licenses and double as official "weigh stations" for those who think they've broken a record. I mention it because it assumes either internet access or available transporation... so for example, if my nephew walks to the pier near his house and catches something and keeps it, he has neither internet access (well, if he walks to the library) or transportation to a weigh station, which he doesn't, they live in the boonies. Obviously it's not a huge factor in the overall calculations, but it does reflect the assumption that those with a free license on SNAP have either internet or transportation available (and yes, I realize that many do, but many don't, as well.)
Overall, I think it's a fantastic idea!
