    Thumbs up January car care

I have old issues of Woman's Day and I was going through them and noticed a month by month car care guide. So I decided I would list each month what they suggest you do to take care of your car and save money and avoid an untimely and dangerous breakdown.

    For January they suggest:
~Start the year off right by noting your milegage. Is it time for an oil change? After each oil change, jot down the miles and get an oil change as recommended in your owners manual.

~Check your windshield wiper fluid level, particularly if you drive in an area where you have to clean your windshield frequently.Use a wiper fluid with alcohol to keep it from freezing if you live in a cold area.

~It if's been more than six months since you changed your windshield wiper blades, buy some new ones.

~Keep a well-stocked emergency kit in your car's trunck. It should include jumper cables, flares or reflective triangles, first-aid kit, antifreeze/coolant, windshield washer fluid, flashlight, blanket, road atlas or map, water and a plastic tarp that can be used aas rainwear or a ground cover when you need to change a tire.

I would add a blanket to the list (at least for this time of year).

    Great tips Michelle, thanks!

A bag of kitty litter is a good thing to have when you get stuck too.

I think the kitty litter is to pour out under the tires to help you be able to get some traction if you get stuck in the snow or mud, Daphne but I could be wrong....

You are right Lisa. If you get suck without kitty litter you can always turn your floor matts over and use the "knobby side" to get out. Worked for me

Just be sure you don't forget it when you leave
