Question Should credit cards be given to 18 year olds?

I have to say NO. At 18 I don't think most kids no how to handle credit cards. I think it just makes it far to easy to set up a lifetime of bad habits, especially if they haven't learnt how to handle cc debt, and that is to pay the amount owing off at the end of each month.

I think it depends on the kid and the kind of credit card they have. I think having one with a low limit, say $250 would be a good learning tool for them. I had a Chevron gas card in my name since I was 18 and I quickly learned how not to abuse it. I always paid off the card in full each month and it was a great learning experience. I do not recommend high limit cards though!

NO WAY! I'm 39 (I think? LOL) and I couldn't handle one NOW!

If DS had one he'd be in serious trouble within a week!

Not a regular card, no.but they do have the prepaid ones now and that could be a good idea. they can only spend the amount they put on the card, no more.

Depends on the individual and their credit and finances.

I agree with Michelle, it depends on the person, their maturity and financial sense.

This is a toss up for me....I agree with CJ and also with Debbie...
I know adults who are better off without any card...and most 18 yr olds I do not think are ready....but there are the few who are mature and responsible and can handle it....but I think the limits should be and remain low.. at least for longer than they do now...I don't believe the cc companies should be in such a hurry to up the limits.

My first reaction to the question was a big fat NO! But then on reading all your responses, I agree will both sides. If the teen in question is responsible, then maybe it would be okay with a CC with a prepaid one. Prepaid by the teenager.

Unfortunately, in our society, you have to have credit. No one wants to lend anyone money with no credit history. Credit cards are a quick and easy way to establish credit. There's nothing wrong with an 18 year old having a gas card, or a dept store card with a real low limit ($200) to help establish credit.

But what I totally disagree with is credit companies targeting college students with no money, and no means of steady income to get them to apply for cards that have high limits intended to get the student over their heads in debt real quick.

    Credit cards are so evil.

Only if it has a very low limit on it.
