Thumbs down Its my turn to faint!!

We just got both our electrical and gas (heat) bill today and its now my turn to faint.

I'll give you the good news first, although I don't see much good in it. For our gas bill we used 99.003 cubic feet less of gas and with all the rises in natural gas, our bill was only $23.82 different from last year at this time. I know its a decrease and we used an incredible amount less in cubic feet (I'm happy with that), but the difference really bugs me.

This is the killer - last year we used 2160 kwh for 2 months for our electricity. This year we used 3200 kwh. Our electricity bill for the same 2 month period last year was $143.79. The same time period for this year, $205.99. And we don't even have the 3% raise on it yet that electricity is going for.

So were now on the hunt to see where were using all this electricity. Dh turned down his heat in his workshop (he has a small electric heater in there), we now plan on plugging our car in first thing when he gets up rather than all night, but I don't have a clue where else we can cut. I'm thinking our freezer, which is 21 years old and not energy efficient might be the cause of this.

Right now I feel like screaming because this has messed up our budget BIG time!!!

Oh no! That's bad news! CJ, could the very cold weather have brought up your bill?....I'm sure mine will be higher, too. It could be a good thing, to change freezer, if it's that old. I was sometimes thining of not having a freezer, since ours is often half full...

Good luck finding new ways to save electricity.

I'll post a few things I do to save on electrcity. Maybe I do soemthigns different....who knows...maybe I can help.

It's just so darn cold this year! Hope you find out what is sucking up the electricity CJ. Lets all hope for an early Spring, I think we are all ready for it.

Don't feel bad, you are not the only one with high electric bills. Ours is also higher than last year. Usually we don't even have to have the heat pump on because we use the coal stove, but this year has been so cold that we have the heat pump running almost non stop, and the baseboard heater is also running quite frequently. I never thought that I would yearn for the days of 30 degree weather. This single digit weather is a killer.

Our electric bill was like that a few months ago..I about had a heart attack and I was going crazy thinking how we could use more than double the amout of kwh...so the first thing I did was compare our meter reading to theres and low and belhold they got the reading wrong and I was being charged for double what I used....
So I would check your readings first...then if thats ok...as you said I'd try to find the leaks...
    Good luck
