Default How much does it cost to bake a loaf of bread?

I realize it depends on what kind and where you live, but on the average what do you think it costs?. I'm thinking of baking my own bread and wondering how much, if any, I'll save. The homemade bread will be healthier, of course. Right now I pay between .77 and .88 for a 1 to 1 1/2 pound loaf. I have a bunch of $1/any bread tags to use while I'm decideing. Then again, maybe autumn would be a better time to start...... (oh, I could use the tags on those onion hamburger buns we like so much!)

Ideas? Suggestions? Feedback? Surely someone has done the math on this one. TIA!

I can make white bread (in 6 loaf batches) for .24 a loaf.

Wheat bread costs me about .48/loaf

I get my yeast from Sam's and if I get the flour on sale (49¢), not including the electrcity of the oven... about 16¢ for a loaf of white bread.

In the winter, all we eat is homemade bread but, in the summer... well, that's another story. It is just entirely too hot to have the oven on here. Then I'll buy bread from the thrift store. I pay 50¢ a loaf for name brand honey wheat off the bargain table. I don't mind paying more than double what I can make bread for because 1) honey wheat 2) at the grocery store the same loaf is a $1.79 so I'm still getting a deal and 3) my house stays cool and the a/c doesn't have to work harder.

I worked mine out several years ago at around 36 cents a loaf. I factored in ingredient cost as well as electricity used to mix and bake the bread.

I did an oven load (4 loaves) at a time.

Yeah, I thought I probably didn't need the oven on all summer. I'll bet with a little practice I could get the grill set at the proper temp to bake though. (I bake in it when we camp) I've bought bread from the thrift store here before, but it didn't keep well, too old already.

    Thanks everyone!
