Default Frugal meal? Who are they kidding??!!

In my newest Safeway ad, there is a section called, "A great family meal for under $10"! Well, here's the meal:

    French bread @ .99
    Fresh Express salad @ .99
Banquet heat and eat nuggets @ 4.99
Safeway corn on the cob @1.50 (4 pk)
    Safeway 2 liter soda @.75

Let's see how we can revamp this to a frugal meal!

Homemade biscuits (with mix) about .30
Fresh Express salad from a 3 lb bag @ about .65
    Whole chicken @ .59/lb, baked $2.07
fresh corn on the cob (husks still on) @ .15 each= .60 for 4
    Iced tea 1 gallon @ about .15

So, our new total for approximately the same meal? Roughly 3.75 or a savings of about $6.00!

Is it any wonder why many people can't make their food stamps stretch or why people with plenty of $ regularly spend $500.00 plus each month?

Thanks for the comparison Lori, good to see it in black and white! It's amazing "if the stores say it" people believe it!

Lori, it could also be cheaper if:

~you grow your own salad makings (lettuce, radishes, green onions) and make your own salad dressings
~you grow your own corn in your garden

In doing that, you could bring it down by $1.25

And if you drank ice cold water, it would cost even less yet.

If Safeway in the States is anything like Safeway in Canada, their prices are absolutely nuts!!!

AND your version has less trans fats (breaded nuggets, huge source), less calories, less fat overall, less sugars (coke vs ice tea) AND less PACKAGING.

Great thread! Isn't just amazing how different the "retail" defination of frugal is compared to ours.
Books are the treasured wealth of the world and the fit inheritance of generations and nations.” --Henry David Thoreau
