He never read the book
Dh never read the book Your Money or Your life, but he has always been frugal. He can make or repair just about anything and if he can't, he will get a book from the library and read up on it until he can. He likes to have expensive tools in his workshop, but he always waits for sales and does price comparisons before he buys anything.
So it really surprised me when he started to thing about how many hours he had to work to purchase something. We had gone for a drive and I had seen something (can't even remember what) in the store and told him how much it costs. He looked and me and said, I'd have to work 2 1/2 hours to pay for that. Now before we purchase anything, he figures out how many hours he has to work. Just too funny!!!!
It really does put into perspective though just how many hours he has to work to pay for things we purchase or might want to purchase. I'm thinking that saw he wants probably will be a long time coming now that he has "got it" even more.

That's great, CJ. You've got a wonderful husband!
I'm sure alot of hard working men and women probably think and realize the efforts of their work to pay certain things and that makes them think *do I really want to spend my money I worked so hard for?*
I know Pierre doesn't talk alot but he is always finding alternatives to buying something when I tell him we will be needing this or that for the boys or the house--for example, just a few days ago I told him I think Patrick will need a bike next year and he told me that Daniel's bike could still be good and he could fix it for him for next year. I thought Daniel's bike was finished, but he could see the possiblities in the bike.
Thankgoodness he can fix things like that! Life can be so expensive if we buy all that we think we need.... sigh...

CJ,
Dh is the same way, he doesn't go to the library to research anything he jumps on his computer then figures it out. If it weren't for him fixing everything We'd be up a creek without a paddle. He can do / fix most anything only thing he can't do that I know of for sure is carpentry work.

I think that is fantastic that he has moved to the next level of the "frugal mindset".
I'm trying to get this same concept into my 3 teenaged sons heads. My biggest pet peeve is when they buy lots of junk food at inflated prices at our little store here in town.
Don't they realize that they had to work for that junk and it just puts them that much further away from what they really want and need????

He must have picked it up from you, CJ. Doing the "how many hours did I work" thing is a good way to be and it gives you a clear idea of just how much something really costs you.
I was surprised a couple of days ago when my elder son Shane, the one who lives in an apartment, rang me to ask if he could borrow my copy of "Your money or your life". We'll see what happens now.
