What can $10 buy you?
CJ's Rags to Riches and Back thread got me to thinking about this...what can $10 buy you that would help your family with your budget.
Here are a few things I came up with based on the prices I just paid the yesterday in the store and in town, each $10 spent would get you one of the following:
~41.66 pounds of whole wheat flour @ .24 a pound
~62.5 pounds of unbleached flour @.16 a pound
~18.86 pounds of brown rice @.53 a pound
~20 cans of Cream of Celery or Cream of Chicken soup @ .50 each
~10 pkgs of feminine napkins or liners @ $1.00 each
~4 20 pound bags of cat litter
~26.31 pounds of bananas @.38 a pound
~40 pounds of apples from the U-pick orchard
~2 24 packs of T.P.
~13 boxes of snack crackers (on sale at Safeway for .75 a box right now, best sale I have seen in a long time)
~4 pounds of cheddar cheese
~20 1 pound bags of pasta
~10 tubes of toothpaste
How about you? How far could that $10 get you towards stocking up you pantry, freezer or HBA items?

Sweetie that's an awesome list!!!!!
I'm popping in & out - doing some much needed house cleaning - but I'll be making a mental list to post later on!
Thanks for causing us to stop & rethink that $10 bill in our pocket - too easy to hit the Taco Bell drive-thru & think, "man - $10 doesn't go anywhere..."

Wow Debbie, very impressive.
I'm going to just give you the cost of a few things here:
~20 lbs of flour $5.99 (thats on sale). Of course I grind my own grain but I just wanted to show you the price difference here. For 50 pounds of grain I pay $24.95 because I purchase it 100 lbs. at a time and get 20% off.
~cream of celery or cream of chicken soup 79¢ a can (I make all our own soup so very seldom do I purchase canned soup. Right now the local co-op has 12 cans of chicken noodle soup for $5.99 a case.
~cat litter 20 lb. bag $5.00
~bananas 59¢ a lb. on sale. usually they run around 79¢ a lb.
~apples are running from 98¢ a lb. to $1.49 lb. depending on which week it is.
~tp - 12 pack double roll, $6.99 to $9.89 depending on what brand. I purchased some yesterday at Shopper's Drug Store for $4.99 for 12 pack double roll on sale.
~snack crackers are $1.19 to $1.39 depending on brand and what type of crackers you purchase
~cheddar cheese, anywhere from $5 - 6.00 for approx. lb.
~pasta, from 99¢ a package to $1.59 pkg. depending on brand name and if there is a sale. The lowest I've seen in forever is 99¢ a pkg.
~toothpaste, the smallest size is 69¢ on sale, but can run up to $1.59 per tube.
Quite a difference from American to Canadian prices.

This week my $10 went towards Maxwell House Coffee @ 1.00 per pound. (had a couple of coupons 2 of the cans were .50)
It could also could buy 30 lbs. of pasta @ 3/1.00 (not that I would)
14 2 liter bottles of diet coke @ .69
10 jars of Aunt Millies spagetti sauce at .99
5 8oz pkg's of cheese - block any standard variety
5 lbs of chicken breasts @ 1.89 a lb.
All of these prices are sale prices.
These a just a few of the things I bought this week. The only things I bought $10.00 of were the coffee, chicken and soda.
I spent a lot of money this week but, I have started to shop for the holiday's, chocolate chips, nuts, sprinkles ect.
Homesteadmomma, your pasta prices are high, do you have any clue as to why? Without a sale pasta runs about .89 a lb. here. Everything else seems to be fairly equal to the prices in CT.

I'm loving seeing what you all can get for $10! It really does make it easier to resist going to Taco Bell or McDonalds or even buying those lottery tickets when you realize all the stuff you need that can be gotten for that amount.

pkellyc - I live in Canada and our prices are much higher than American prices.
I'm totally amazed at your prices. For instance:
~spaghetti sauce here on sale is $1.59 and often not lower than $1.99
~1 pound of butter $1.99 on sale which is not often. Usually its around $2.59
~Mandarin oranges on sale $5.99 a box
~2 litre of pop, be it Coke or Pepsi is 99¢ this week. Its usually $1.69 per 2 litre bottle
I could purchase 10 loaves of bread for $9.99 but thats day old bread. Bread here is usually $1.29 - $1.59 depending on where you buy it.
