We usually wait about 3 months or so. I was using a coffee can, but just switched it to a larger container, so probably every 6 mos now.
I wish we could just forget it was even there for about 5 yrs.If you'd like to help support Frugal Living by Sara Noel, my syndicated column, e-mail, write, or call the managing editor at your local newspaper and ask them to publish it in print or online. The silver coins I start saving from the first of the month to the end of the month and take the silver coins and put them on my car payment. This year with my pennies starting January 1 I am going to save them from Jan.1 to Dec. 31 to see how many pennys I have saved in a year. Hope this helps. Everybody does theirs differently. Doesn't matter how you use your change or when you cash in your change. It's a matter of personal preference.

Once a year...we use ours for spending money on our summer vacation.
HOWEVER, that being said, I must admit that all this change jar talk got me curious, so I just dumped it to see how we were doing. I did most of the quarters and got to $25.00, so I'm guessing that with the rest of the quarters and the other types of coins, we are probably at $35.00-$40.00.

Usually every 2 to 3 months when the container gets full I will roll the silver change up and deposit it into my savings account. The pennies I take to coinstar as I hate to wrap pennies. But I will be saving them now for the penny challenge

We usually turn ours in once a year. It usually goes to our vacation, but this year we used it for other things.

I have a two step change jar - a little piggy bank from when I was a kid, and DH and I bought one of those huge coke bottle change towers. As soon as the piggy bank is full, we count it and them dump it in the coke bottle - DH has a separate account for it in MS Money. Right now we're at almost $300 plus we're about the make another deposit from the piggy bank (usually between $45-$55).

I cash in my change jar about once a month. The jar isn't very big, plus its easier to take 10 minutes to wrap the coins than to wait and have a huge amount. I deposit the $ into my savings account.
I just counted the coins the other day and there's $20 to savings tomorrow!

I turn mine in when it gets full and instead of spending the money right away like I used to, this year I'm putting it all into my emergency fund!
