Where to take your aluminum cans
Rhaynefall's thread on the can crusher got me thinking. There was a place near us that used to buy cans, and had a sign up about it. They had taken the sign down long ago, so I figured they weren't doing it anymore, and I didn't know of anyplace else to take them. So I kind of forgot about the idea of saving cans.
I googled around, and found a site where you can search by zipcode for places that take cans near you. Search for recycling locations
Look for the listings in green--they are the commercial ones that should pay.
(Lo and behold, the place near me is listed. I guess they just took down the sign!)

Here in NY, if the place you purchase the product in cans charges you a "deposit fee", they HAVE to take them back and give you your deposit back.

Yep, brought ours back yesterday & bribed a couple of helpers to pitch & grin.
I live in NY like Dee, where do you live PoorRichardsGirl? Most states around us have a manditory deposit on all carbonated beverages. It's a pain but keeps the soda cans on the roadside at bay and then some.

I live in NJ, where recycling by towns is mandatory. I remember when I was a kid, you could go to the supermarket and get the deposit back for soda bottles and such. A nice way for kids to make a little spending money. But after the recycling law was passed, that ended.
Now you either put them out on recycling day, and the town makes the money from it, or you take them somewhere that pays by the pound. And you could actually get fined if you tried to take cans out of someone else's trashcan--the towns don't want to miss out on that income!
A friend of ours actually used to take a trunkload of cans up to NY when he was making the trip anyway. He made out better turning them for the deposit, rather than selling it by the pound here in NJ. So I know where you're coming from, and I'm kind of jealous!
