    Default Need Food Help

My husband and I are both business travelers. He is a long-distance truck driver and I am a corporate traveler. Most of our meals are eaten on the road which becomes very expensive. Adding to this is my being diabetic and having food restrictions(no fruit or items made with sugar). Does anyone have any tips as to how to lower our food bill? Lately I've been packing snacks such as nuts, sugarfree homemade cookies, Atkins bars and drinks but I need more suggestions as to what to pack or other ways I can save substantially on food. Hubby works for a major vitamin chain so we get a 30% discount on any foods purchased there but they do not sell main meals. Refrigeration is also a problem as we don't always have access to refrigerators. Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Stacy,

There are lunch containers with so many different options if you need something insulated. Get a couple of small freezer packs to keep foods and drinks cold. Small thermos go a long way in keeping foods hot or cold. Try bringing homemade soups, casseroles, etc. specificly made for your dietary needs, at home in the crockpot if you are strapped for time. Also freeze individual meals in containers that you can take out quickly before work, heat up in a pan or microwave and put in your thermos, etc. Fill your thermos with very hot water for a few minutes and empty it out just before you put your hot meal.

Whatever you choose to do, know that you have a choice to take homemade healthy food over processed, expensive take out.

What about purchasing one of those coolers that plugs into the cig. lighter of the truck or car? You could make up some frozen meals and send those with dh for at least a couple of days worth of eating and not have to worry if they'd get too warm and spoil.
