anyone purchase their meat at a meat market?
I started purchasing our meat at a meat market and am really happy with this decision. The prices are competitive with the local grocery store. They have weekly sales and give me an additional 10% off my total order. There's a larger variety and I love just placing my order, having everything cut the way I want, wrapped, and the service is wonderful.

We have butcher shops here were you can buy meat. It's always much cheaper than supermarket meat. Even though I don't eat meat, I really like the idea of shopping at a specialist store where they just do the one product. They usually have better quality for a better price.
Ten percent off and wonderful service is a great combo.

Where we used to live we had a meat market and I loved it. The meat seemed so much fresher, not vacumn packed like here. There is a small Mexican Meat store here in town but I've yet to go it. I guess I'm afraid no one will speak English but some day I need to take the plunge and see whats in there.
Handymom, our SuperWalmart is higher than the other 2 grocery stores on meat.

Boy do I wish we still had butcher shops around here. When I was growing up there was one not too far from home, but I don't know if there are any around anymore. I know I would go there for my meat if I could find one.

I do this quite frequently. I tend to save money and get good quality meat this way.

I wish we had a butcher shop here too! When I was a kit that's where my parents shopped for meat and so I was used to it. We moved here and not one!

when I have it's been wonderful but the prices are higher here, so sometimes I do, but often I don't.
I do go in there for their hams when I'm taking one down to fil. They are the only place I can get them where all the ham fat hasn't been trimmed off, and fil adores cracklings.
He is 89 this Feb and still going strong, so I like to give him what he wants, and that butcher has the best ham.

We don't have a butcher shop but we have a meat locker....we often buy 1/2 beef or the equivalent thereof in cuts that we prefer. It's much cheaper and MUCH better meat.

This last year, we have begun to purchase the whole cow and the entire pig. DH has a friend who is a meat cutter for a grocery store and who has his own shop. They actually butcher the animal and process the meat. We specify what cuts we want and it comes to me nicely packaged, in the size package that I specify and the meat is wonderful. At first I thought this was too expensive since I could find hamburger on sale cheaper than it cost me per pound when buying this way. But then I realized that I am getting the other cuts for a much lower price and the meat is much better so I am satisfied. I think the last cow cost me 169 or 179 per pound and I had a freezer chock full plus some to share!
We are almost ready to buy another one now.

I've done the half a beef thing, and found that we ended up with way too much of some cuts (like stew and ground) and not enough of others (tender roasts and steaks). Although it was a lot less per lb for the expensive cuts, it came in as a bit pricey for the ground meat.
I found that by shopping the sales, I consistently did better price wise and we had the cuts that suited us.
however if you want organically raised meat, it is often the only option that you can be sure of.
