Going to
Sam's Warehouse this weekend. I know that some of these things can be regional but what are some of the best buys that you get from there. I know from experience that some of their stuff costs pretty much the same in bulk as it would if I just bought it in smaller amounts.
Anyway..what are the things you find yourself purchasing most at a Sam's or a Costco?

I buy eggs, grapes, bananas, splenda, and yeast at Sam's Club.
Eggs - $5 (7.5 dozen)
Grapes - 99c/lb (3lb container)
Bananas - 33c/lb (3lb bag)
Splenda - $16 (1000 packets - lasts us nearly 3 months)
Yeast - $3 (2lbs...I was SHOCKED, as I had been paying $4 for 4oz at the commissary!
)

We don't buy a ton of things from there since their organic offerings are very few. Mostly we buy things that we can't afford to buy organic.
- yeast
- vinegar
- olive oil
- tuna
- maple syrup
- various spices
- organic coffee
- contact lens from the optical department
- saline (for contacts)
- bananas (our store sells them in 4lb. bags now)
- garlic
- frozen tilapia (fish)
- frozen grouper (fish)
- baking soda
- tp, unless we can get it cheaper on sale elsewhere
- peanuts
- chocolate chips (a big bag of these lasts us a very long time)
- pecans (won't be buying any unless the price goes down though - over $6/lb. here now, used to be about $3.98/lb.)
- cat food
- freezer baggies

Know your prices, some things are much more expensive at Costco
I find the following to be a good bargain here in western Canada:
toilet paper, their house brand, called Kirkland
Laundry detergent, Kirkland
Dishwasher detergent, Kirkland
Bounty paper towels (my favourite brand, it doesn't shred)
Vit E the natural one, also Kirkland
CoEnzyme Q10, not sure the brand, but the only one they carry. It's half the price of anywhere else.
Salmon oil
Evening Primrose Oil
Splenda as you mentioned
Maple Syrup (the other sugars are more expensive there)
Some cold cereals
Almond butter and peanut butter
Walnuts, and almonds in the 2lb pack. (keep in freezer for freshness)
Tuna and Salmon, canned.
Folgers Coffee
Coffee filters in the 500 pack
Ziplock bags in the big bulk packs
Cheddar cheese
Philly cream cheese
Becel margerine
Unsalted butter and regular butter
Organic salad mix in the big clear tubs
organic spinach same.
Ground beef (one of the safer places to buy it actually, put it in the freezer after repacking into smaller ziplocks, and mark the date and lot #-- if there is a recall Costco is exceptionally good to announce it)
Printer ink refills
Books, they often have the bestsellers discounted the deepest.
Magazines ditto for anything I don't want to subscribe to, but may want the occaisional copy.
that's my main list of stuff I prefer to get there for either cheaper (mostly) or in the case of ground meat, quality. I find that even though their stuff is cheaper, and around the cost of the supermarket no name, it's far better quality.
They make their money on your impulse buys. However some of their bargains in the towels, blankets, pillows, and even housewares and small appliances are great.
Know your prices, go in with a list, when you see a deal on say a bathroom light fixture (I did) check it against prices in Home Depot before your next trip. Then pick it up if it fits your needs and budget. We saved a fair bit on that, and on a deal 3 years back with those twirly flourescent energy saver bulbs.

Your list, it's a price book, and they rock.
The price book, is a price book, even if it isn't in a book. Usually I say simpler is better. Tracking the stuff you use the most rather than every item bought in a year works easiest.
that way you know if it's a bargain or simply a huge bucket of whatever product, that looks like one, but isn't.

It is a price book and I am loving it. It really is saving me time and energy. Before when one store would have it on sale I was always afraid to buy it thinking that it might still not be cheaper than another place I shop. So it has really helped me to check and compare

Now I couldn't live without it.

I find Costco has the cheapest prices for products that I use daily over all other stores in my area. I buy:
kitty litter
olive oil
grated romano cheese
fresh meat and poultry in bulk
boullion cubes
butter
mozzerella cheese
dish detergent
bath soap
shampoo and conditioner
contact solution
veggie burgers
vegatabel oil

I'm in the process of trimming my Costco runs down to once a quarter (every three months). Here's what's on my list:
8 packages of bread (16 loaves)
Marinated Pork Loin (cut into fourths - to provide 4 meals)
Case of albacore tuna (12 cans)
1 double packages of ham lunchmeat (dh's lunches)
1 double package of turkey lunchmeat (dh's lunches)
Juice boxes (36ct)
3 cases of beer (30ct) (for dh
)
3 cases diet coke (32ct) (ditto
)
2 boxes granola bars (dh's lunches)
Case canned mushrooms (12 cans)
Organic Baby carrots 2 packages of 5lbs each
Ramen (24ct)
Garden burgers
Cat food
Cat litter
Other stuff (purchased less often than quarterly):
Spices & seasonings
YEAST! (ditto what Heather said about the cost!)
Multi-vitamins
Fish oil capsules (for dh's arteries)
"Move Free" (supplement for dh's achy joints)
Laundry detergent
I was getting dishwasher detergent there, but I think that's changing...Last time I couldn't find one that suited me (I'm picky about environmental stuff).
There's also a lot of stuff I don't buy there because I buy it organic instead. They do have organic milk for a slightly better price than I get elsewhere, but the Costco organic milk only comes in 2% and my dc think it tastes weird - they are used to nonfat. I used to buy their bagged shredded cheeses (mozzarella and cheddar), and then keep the bag in my freezer. Now we only buy organic dairy products.

You know, after my Yeast epiphany
I plan on making a trip to our Sam's Club just to make note of their prices on bulk items. I never really looked before...
The same day I bought the yeast, I got a HUGE container of dried onions for 88c!! I can't even get the tiny little spice containers for 88cents!
