Gas card brainstorm session
Now that Christmas is getting closer I'm busy trying to come up with creative ways to cover the gas money for holiday travels. (My goal is to come up with enough free gas cards to cover the whole expense, which I estimate to be about $150 round trip. Youch
Here's what I've come up with so far:
Visaextras- I should be able to cash in points for $10-15 in BP cards
Walgreens- I know that they have gift cards for sale for a lot of different stores and restaurants. Anyone know if they have gift cards for gas stations? I'm thinking about using some of my Walgreen's rebate GCs for gas. Anyone know if you can use a Walgreen's GC to buy another GC? If this works I'm thinking I could add another $30 in gas cards this way.
My points- Don't think I'll have enough points in time.
Still need to check how many points I have at the survey sites I participate in.
At best that gives me $45 in gas cards, and another $105 to go.
Does anyone have any other ideas? I'm guessing a lot of us will be looking for a way to cover holiday gas costs, so hopefully if we all brainstorm we can come up with some good solutions.
TIA

Woo hoo. I'm excited to say that I've done well amassing the money we'll need to cover our gasoline costs over the holidays. My original goal was $150, which was to drive our largest vehicle. We've since decided to squeeze into one of our smaller cars, which gets much better mileage. That brought our gas estimate down to $100.
Here's what I came up with:
Cashed in Walgreen's rebate money for 2 $10 Shell cards
Cashed in VisaExtras points for $10 in BP cards
Received a $25 Food City GC at Thanksgiving from my husband's employer. They have a gas station we can use it at.
Then my MIL gave us $42 for Christmas to be used towards gas.
That brings the total to $97
We also participated in a rebate offer through Castrol, and have earned another $10 in BP cards, and I earned a $5 gas card through a survey. Haven't received these yet, but they would bring the total to $112.
Yippie
I wasn't really sure I'd be able to pull this one off, but I'm happy to say it looks like we won't suffer any out of pocket gas expenses.

Plus, I'm now excited about the possibility of using some of the same strategies to cover our vacation gas costs this summer. I didn't have much time to come up with gas cards this time, so I'm thinking I'll have more ways to amass cards this time around including mypoints and some of the survey sites I belong to.
Hope this gives others a few ideas for covering the rising costs of gas.

I almost always redeem my Mypoints for gas cards. It was a bummer to see a couple of weeks ago that they upped the points needed. Oh well. Great planning!

Thanks everyone. Hope you all have a great Christmas too. Can't wait to enjoy my travels without worries about gas. Just wish I had thought of this years sooner.
