Smile Question for Peanut regarding Cold Rooms

I was just reading in a one income family thread and you had mentioned about a cold room. I have a cold room but everything seems to freeze in there in the winter. I do have my freezer in there and some wooden bins and wooden shelves.

Is there anything which I could do so that I can keep my veggies in there in the winter months without feezing? I can't even keep my canned foods in there without that happening and I want to learn how to can this year etc. There is no window in there (I don't think that there is supposed to be anyhow lol.)

Thanks for any thoughts on this

My guess is you might want to insulate the room. It sounds like it's just plain too cold. I can't think having the freezer there would make it colder.

The only other option I can think of would be to actually heat the room a bit.

We insulated the interior walls of our cold room, but not the exterior wall. However the door is a hollow wood door, so the room isn't too cold. We also didn't insulate the ceiling.

I don't know if any of that helps you or not. I'm not entirely sure of your situation. HTH

Thanks Peanut, that did help . Our ceiling is insulated but the walls and floor are cement. I guess our next project will be to maybe insulate the walls at least and give that a try. It is only the wall on the end and side wall that is not insulated , on the other side of those walls would be the outdoors.

We also have styrofoam (sp?) on the inside of the door which covers the whole length and width of the door and is wooden and hollow inside.

    Thanks so much

I have heard that putting the veggies in a tub of sand keeps them from freezing. You've got nothing to lose if it doesn't work!

You may want to move the freezer out of the 'cold room'. It's going to use more electricity and wear down on the life of the freezer if it's in too cold of an area.

Found that out the hard way when we tried to keep ours in the garage. Of course, up here we get down WAY below zero in the winter, so that makes a difference I'm sure.

I have a cold room...it's called my mud room. It's cold because it's uninsulated LOL

    LOL!

Thanks for the information about keeping the freezer in the cold. I didn't realize that. Our temp. here drops well below zero too in the winter.
