Exclamation I tried to open an Ing account but I need a cheque. (Vent ahead)

We have a chequing account but our bank is in the province of Ontario and we live in Quebec so it is going to take from the time they send and we receive the cheque (10 to 14 days) and then we fill it out and have to mail it to Ing, this is going to take a very long time.

I had all of my bank information to give ing so that they could direct debit but no, they need an actual cheque, no other way at all to set up an account with them.

Dh and I have not written a cheque in at least 8 or 9 years although we do have a chequing account. Years ago we had 2 cheques bounce and I think the service fees were about $12 for each then so we decided, we don't have to write cheques to cover things as if we need it the cash should be in our account to cover it anyhow. So we have been paying for everything either for cash or debit or like the mortgage etc has direct debit.

Anyhow I am just frustrated, I am still trying to call my bank in ontario and actually speak to a person (not a machine....lol ) so that I may have one cheque sent to us opposed to having to pay for a whole package of cheques but when I called the 1-800 the man I spoke with told me that he didn't think that the banks would do that anymore....of course I have no clue since I can't seem to reach anyone from my bank .

I never thought it would be such a hard time to open a savings account, not to mention in this day and age would I have thought after all of these years of not writing cheques would we need one , especially to open a savings account.

Is this true for all of those with an Ing account? Did you have to send a cheque to them or is there a way to do it over the phone? Maybe I should call someone eles with Ing? I only got the information from one guy there, maybe he was mistaken? or maybe I misunderstood him? although I repeated everything back to him just to be sure I understood correctly as I was just stunned.

That's weird, I never had to send in a check to open an ING account, maybe it's because your in Canada and not in the US?

Beware, a not too bright question coming.

I'm not too big into finances, so could you please tell me what the heck is an ING account? I've never heard of it until recently on this site.

ING is an internet bank. Their savings account pays much more interest than the brick and mortar accounts around here. Last time, I checked they were paying around 4% interest.

My friend recently opened an ING account by mail and she did have to write a check from her checking account made out to herself and send it to them.

I think they may have asked her for the check routing number and the account number of her check, not sure what else they asked on the telephone. Anyway, she did not want to give that kind of info over the telephone/internet, so she did it by mail but she still had to send in the actual check. If you don't have a check in front of you to read from, that could cause a problem with opening an acccount.

I just remembered, the man told me that I needed a cheque because there are numbers between or on the paper of the cheque which they read to verify.......but still Sheeeshhhhh

Oh well, what can I do? Maybe it is something new ?

I do love the idea of the direct debit not to mention the compound interest which here in Canada for Ing right now is at 3%.

I finally got ahold of my bank in ontario, they were surprised as well that I couldn't just give them the information over the phone. They are sending me two cheques, I asked for a second cheque just in case something like this ever happens again.

Stugglingmomof3 , your thread inspired me, I think it was called struggling to make a decision , to have money automatically transfered into your Ing account This inspired me to finally stop talking about it and just doing it . Thanks!

    !
Yep. I think the other numbers that appear along with the account numbers are the really important ones. They are like "bank numbers" or something. I have been asked for them before.

I think you did the right thing by asking for 2 checks. You made a good decision about banking too
