close call
I was checking my checking account on line yesterday and noticed that Iwas over drawn how could this have happened so I went and got my check register and sure enough I had forgotten to put in a entry when I used to visa dept card, dang there are the bounce check fees and I still had 2 outstanding checks I figured I was in big trouble will dh got paid on friday figured I could do a transfer on friday so I called the bank to find out exatly how much the fee would be and they said that the fees had not been added yet and if I could transfer some money from another account since it was to late in the day to do a deposit So I transfered some money from our savings account to cover it and now I don't have the bounce check fees that was a close call I guess I will have to make sure when I use the visa card to be more careful the recepit had gotten put in the bag and not in my wallet from now on all recepits are going in my wallet no if and and buts about it. this happended just as we had everything caught up from the big utility bills from last month. This happens right after my doc tells me to lower my stress level. Thanks for listening I just need to share this with someone. thanks again.

Glad you didn't get those nasty bank fees and you caught it right away.

Can your bank set it up so that you can have your savings automatically transfer in the event of something like that happening? As a cushion?

I am very glad you didn't get the fees either
I have a "money journal" I keep it in my purse and when I am home ordering online I keep it by the computer
I put every purchase in the journal and subtract as I go.

Glad you caught it early. I actually had something similar happen to me recently. I never over draw but I did this time by not recording a big check I wrote for a bill. Ugh.

That's great you weren't charged the fees. This has happened to me before, and unfortunately I didn't get out paying the fees. But, it did teach me a very valuable lesson. First of all, I only use checks to pay bills with. That's it. I shop with cash. I know that for some people this doesn't work as well as using checks and debit cards, but for me it does. Second, as soon as I write a check I don't wait a second to record it in my ledger, and subtract from the balance.

I keep a $200 cushion in my regular checking account. This actually happened accidentally two years ago when I recorded an ATM withdrawal twice. I just left it alone, and every month, it shows up on my Quicken reconciliation as an outstanding item. Nice to know if I forget to record a debit purchase at Aldi's, I won't be bouncing checks!

I used to keep my card in a little envelope ((from my bank, just the right size to hold the card) that I wrote on when I used it. You could easily make one out of plain paper and tape, then just make sure you keep your card in it and keep a pen with you. Makes it easy to remember to write everything down.
