Out of Oil
Well 3 nights ago I was in the kitchen all evening cooking and studying, didnt come out of the kitchen, it was warm in there. Well what do you know as soon as SO gets home from work I go into den and he says its cold in here, of course I hadnt noticed as I was in the kitchen with the hot stove.
Turns out we are out of oil, we knew we were low but were trying to stretch it until April, only a few more weeks we wouldnt of needed it. The tank is underground and holds 500 gal...we can get 100 gal for 250 dollars. Thank God we have electric baseboard which we never use because its too expensive (the oil tank lasted for 2 years, but costs a fortune to fill up, but is cheaper in the long haul) so for 3 days we have been using electric in the den only, and using an elec blanket in bedroom. Its chilly, but we are not dying. SO wants to get 100 gal put into the tank, around 250$, but I feel we should stick it out for the next month with using the elc in one room, which sort of floats thru(ranch house). I dont feel that the elec will cost 250 extra, and we know that putting oil in the tank will. If we dont fill it now, we have the money in pocket, and over the summer or in fall prices may drop (even a little) and it would be cheaper to fill.
What do you guys think?

That is what we are doing right now, even with our tank having 130 gallons of oil in it.
We've been using our econo heat heaters and we haven't turned on our heat at all this winter. We did notice our electric bill go up by $50-$60 a month but I agree, it's better than forking out $250-$300 a month in oil.
I say keep your chin up, the days will start getting warmer and you wont even notice the difference.
Are you in PA? If so, we're supposed to hit the 60's this weekend!

I notice your in Virginia, the days are going to start warming up just keep your fingers crossed, the past couple days have been pretty nice out... we turned off one of our heaters in the one room and there really isn't that much of a difference.

sheesh, I thought I posted this in the main forum, Im not feeling so bright tonight. Anyways, its not 250 a month for oil, but would be 250 for 100 gallons, which would last us 4-5 months. But the prices may go down (who knows, its possible?). So I agree with you, i should wait. Yep, Im in Va, yesterday it was 65, this morning in snowed, but didnt stick. Hopefull spring is on its way!!!

I'd tough it out too, I know how bad it is to run out of fuel oil though we heated with it at our old house but we'd go through 250 gallons or more a month!
It was a HUGE old drafty farm house, we ran out when it was -10 degrees! Thank goodness for the woodstove in the living room! Now THAT was an adventure!
I'm in Ohio and SO looking forward to the weather being in the 60's this weekend too!

I'm guessing the oil is only used for heating the house? your water heater and stove is electric?
if so- I'd tough it out too.
