Thanks for the reminder. I got a sad wake-up call myself the other day. Part of my job is talking to employees of small businesses about the importance of saving for retirement. I spoke with a very nice woman last week who will NEVER be able to retire. (Those are her words, not mine.)
She is 60 years old, and makes $8.50 an hour, doing a WAREHOUSE job. (She told me it's getting harder to lift 70 pound bales.) She has $8,000 save for retirement, and she is adding $15 a paycheck to that. (Her boss also adds to her account on an annual basis.) She has no house. No medical insurance. (Luckily she is healthy.)
I KNOW how hard it is to save money on $8.50 an hour, and I'm very proud of her for saving as much as she does. But it so saddened me when she said, "Well, as long as I can get vertical, I'm going to have to keep working."
The good news is that in 5 years she should be eligible for Medicare, and *could* start taking Social Security, which should give her something. But what if something happens between now and then? It sounded as though she had no family, although she did mention a girlfriend.
Please...don't let this be you!!!

I just wonder how many more people out there are in the same situation. She is at least saving something. But she's really just one bad turn from disaster.
I really just want to encourage other people to avoid being in this situation.

"Frivolous pleasures are fleeting. Not having to worry about from where your next meal will come is priceless."
That last line of the article says it all. Thanks for the link.
