Default Interesting Church Sermon that relates back to Debt.

So, I was sitting at home on my birthday, before I went out to celebrate, and I received a phone call from a lady in my old church congregation. Turns out that the pastor that used to officiate my old church was going to be up here in Des Moines, doing a sermon in a church about ten minutes from where I live.

So of course, I went to see him and he delivered the most wonderful sermon. Very briefly, he recapped the story of David V. Goliath and then put this spin on it:

Giants have to be faced to be defeated. (I took that as meaning, you have to realize you have a giant. No one can kill a giant if they are in denial that they have a giant.)

In order to be a giant killer, you have to have preparation. (For me, this is debt realization.) Also, you have to be faithful in the lonely places and in the little things. (Trust in God to see you through the bad weeks, when you're on less than Empty in your car and have 5$ to make it to the next payday.)

Also, it's not 'can you see your giant, but can you see your God? (Don't let your giant consume you, focus on the good things in life that the Lord has provided.)

Use what you have. When Moses was told he would free the Hebrews, he told the Lord he had a speaking problem. God basically said, Don't tell me what you DON'T have, tell me what you do have. Moses had a stick. Look at how far that stick got Moses. The apostles told Jesus that there were thousands of people and not enough food for them all. Jesus said don't tell me what you don't have, tell me what you do have. All those people were feed with food left to spare. And Jesus' mother told him, we don't have enough wine. Jesus didn't voice this b/c he respected his momma, but he probably thought, well goodness Momma, what do you have. She had jugs of water which Jesus turned into wine. Apply this to your life. Don't think in terms of, if only I made XX amount of dollars. Think, this is my income. Let's figure out different debt attack plans with my income.

In order to give yourself new perspective about your situation complete this sentence: My giant is _______, but my God is bigger. FOr me this reads, my giant is debt, but my God is bigger. This keeps your head on the bigger picture.

And finally, Giant Killers give credit where credit is due. As an example, David killed Goliath. David wrote the majority of the Psalms. No where in the Psalms is David bragging it up about slaying Goliath. Instead, he is praising God.

Giants are anything. I just related it to debt, because that's something easy to illustrate.

I hope other people find this as inspiring as I did. Of course, my pastor was much more inspiring.

That is a very good thought. I had several I could put in that sentence. Thank you for the post.

Thank you so much for posting that! I really appreciate it! Great thoughts, and nothing like looking at biblical examples to help us deal with our own problems.
