I don't cook a lot of rice, but I believe the ratio is 2 parts water to 1 part rice. In other words always twice as much water as rice. If I am wrong, someone please correct me.

Yes, that's a good rule of thumb. One part rice, two parts water. It almost always takes about 25 minutes (but is sooooo much nicer than instant)!!

Yep 2 to 1 ratio. You can use the rice in casseroles. Just add some rice, chicken and broth. Cook Dinner.

Last fall I got a Fanny Farmer cookbook, and it suggests for perfect rice, to cook it like pasta in a pot of water, testing it for doneness, and then drain it. I haven't tried it, but it makes a certain amount of sense. Have any of you ever cooked rice this way?

The others are right the ratio is 2 parts water 1 part rice. I have always had good luck baking my rice in the oven. Justput it in a covered casserole at 350 for about 45 minutes. It turns out perfect every time. I also make huge amounts this way and freeze the excess in meal size portions. Rice freezes beautifully and this is great for quick meals.

2 cups water to 1 cup rice. Bring to a boil and then simmer in a covered pot. Do not lift the lid or it won't cook.

I bought a 20 lb bag of PATHMARK Arroz Lujoso Grano Large Enriquecido rice when it was on sale since it was a great price I think $2.99 DH thinks I'm crazy & says what are we going to do w/that big of a size bag of rice? I said eat it
I love rice w/in many meals!
COOKING DIRECTIONS:
1. In a large saucepan; 1 cup rice; 2 cups water; 1 teaspoon salt; 1 tablespoon butter or margarine.
2. Bring to a boil over high heat.
3. Reduce heat to simmer and cover pan.
4. Cook 18 - 20 minutes.
NOTE
Increased amounts of water and longer cooking time result in more tender, moist rice, and can be adjusted as desired.
I haven't cooked any of it yet! But I will use the Rice cooker I bought from HSN probably when I do!

I have a cheap-o rice cooker I bought from Wal-Mart for $12. It includes a little cup and scraper for the pot. It says you're supposed to put 1 and 1/2 c. water for each 1 c. rice, but I normally just do 1 c. water and 1 c. rice and it turns out great! I love my rice cooker, I couldn't live without it now!
And while it says not to put in veggies, I've never had a problem shaking in a few handfuls of frozen veggies to steam with the rice. 10 minutes and you have a great (and frugal) meal!

Yes ma'am, have had a rice cooker even from when I was a child.

A TIP: Put a steamer in there on a platform. Dont know what its called but its a base you put in pot of boiling water to support bottom of the steamer/dish you put on it and the steaming of the rice action does double duty. Or just rest the dish right into the rice and let it go altogether - you get a softer rice just where the dish sat.
HEY! Thats kinda cool that you can bake your rice in oven to 'steam' it
You learn something new everyday!

When we use the rice cooker, we measure with our fingers from the top of the rice in the bottom of the pot, there should be about 1/2- 3/4 inch of water. Always turns out fine.
