Tired of paying too much at the pump?
Check this out: I received this e-mail from a frienda and I thought folks in the Village would be interested>>>
Want gasoline prices to come down? We need to take some intelligent, united action.
This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the I-won't-buy-gas-on-a-certain-day campaign that was going around last April or May.
The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to "hurt" ourselves by refusing to buy gas. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them.
BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work. Please read on and join with us! Oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a gallon of gas is CHEAP at $1.50 - $1.75. We need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the marketplace..... not sellers. With the price of gasoline going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of gas come down is if we hit someone in the pocketbook by not purchasing their gas! And, we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. How? Since we all rely on our cars, we can't just stop buying gas. But we CAN have an impact on gas prices if we all act together to force a price war.
Here's the idea:
For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY gasoline from the two biggest companies (which now are one), EXXON and MOBIL. If they are not selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit.
But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Exxon and Mobil gas buyers. It's really simple to do! Now, don't wimp out at this point.... keep reading and I'll explain howsimple it is to reach millions of people.
I am sending this note to 30 people. If each of us sends it to at least ten more (30 x 10 =3D 300)... and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 =3D 3,000)...and so on, by the timethe message reaches the sixth group of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers. If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it..... THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!!
Again, all you have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all. (If you don't understand how we can reach 300 million and all you have to do is send this to 10 people.... Well, let's face it, you just aren't a mathematician. But I am, so trust me on this one.)
How long would all that take? If each of us sends this e-mail out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days.
I'll bet you didn't think you and I had that much potential, did you?
Acting together we can make a difference. If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on. I suggest that we not buy from EXXON/MOBIL UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE $1.30 RANGE AND KEEP THEM DOWN.
THIS CAN REALLY WORK.
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." Margaret Mead

Dedlered, I totally agree with the final premise of the snopes thing. We ALL should be using less gas. We should all be thinking of ways to decrease our fuel consumption whether that means walking to places, grouping errands, etc. Our dependency on oil is putting Americans at risk in many ways. If everyone decreased their driving by just 10% it would have an enormous impact on global warming and our dependence on the folks in the Middle East. If everyone does their part we can make a difference. I used to drive all the time. I would stick the kids in the car and go for a cruise just to get them to take a nap! Those days are over for me.

My dh is a Hazmat Driver (fuel) and he says that if you want to see prices drop down for gas. #1 Car pool #2 Only use your car when you need to (includes doing all errands in one round). #3 Don't buy anything in store where you buy your gas. since gas stations make more money in the store than they do on the sale of gas and so do the Big oil companies because they own them. #4 Stop complaining and start being a doer.
Those are not from me. He was looking at the site with me and we saw this one and he said ok I want you to let the people know what they can do to effect the people who own the companies. My dh calls me and tells me to go fill up because he knows when the prices are going to go up.
Having a national day where you don't buy gas doesn't effect the companies, because the next day everyone is going to be heading to the pumps and filling up.
You could also write to your congressman and complain that there needs to be a cap on the prices. The companies complain that the additives are to exspensive to produce the gas, and that mother nature plays a part in raising the prices (such as Katrina) But then they boast about their profits for the last 6 months.
Just a thought.Last edited by frugalnana; 04-26-2006 at 12:41 PM.

It's basic supply and demand. Oil is a dying resource and the global demand for it is greater than ever. While we should all do what we personally can to conserve gas and oil, all these silly boycotts and whatnot will not do a thing. You'd have to talk the entire country of China into using less gas, for one thing, not to mention the rest of the world.
Your best bet is to buy a fuel-efficient car or take public transportation. Carpooling is a good step, too.

Well, I had no idea about the buying in the store/gas thing, so I may do that, but, we have been commuting by train to work and will until gas goes back to a more affordable price!
Or, maybe not! I really like not driving, and my Dh seems lees irritated by riding the train versus driving!
