Frugal way to clean your jewelry (always makes me think of Canadian Gardener)
I make my own jewelry cleaner out of 1/2 ammonia and 1/2 water. At night, not every night but when my rings and earrings need it, I'll drop my stuff into the little plastic jar with the basket (saved it from when I bought jewelry cleaner a looooonnngg time ago) and let it soak and clean over night. The next morning I rinse it and let it dry or dry it with a wash cloth. Voila`! It's completely clean and all I did was nothing. WARNING: Don't do this with sterling silver jewelry. The ammonia is too hard on it and will eat it away and tarnish it. For sterling stuff use 1/2 water and 1/2 dish liquid and let it sit overnight. Same drill. You might have to use an old toothbrush to clean any stones for the dish soap soak.

When every I make bread or dough or meatloaf I soak my rings in dishsoap and water then rinse and dry and they come out looking great, I always worried that amonia would weeken the metal prongs on my rings. but glad to know amonia does not damage the gold.
