Do you keep your EF at home
or do you put it in an account? I deal with cash mainly with my beauty shop, so I usually have mine in my envelope system at home. Which I do not have fully funded yet, by the way. I wondered how others do it. Since it is an "emergency fund" I felt like it should be where you could get to it quickly. But, the temptation is there if I would need the cash for something else. What do you do?
Thanks,
Sheri

Had mine in ING for while, probably 8 months. Since then I really got to liking the feel of having it, and an extreme fear of using it, so right now it's just in my checking account. I'm not too worried about it being there, the behavior's changed. I keep my checkbook register showing $0 (thanks to Dave Ramsey's zero based budget), but the $1000 small emergency fund in in there.
Gonna change it pretty soon, though, as I'm now where I can build the emergency fund higher (aiming for $6k-8k), and will open a money market account with check writing ability.
Bring on them baby steps...
Step 1: done
Step 2: waiting on amount, hubby had followup colonoscopy, I had visit to ER with followup procedure
Step 3: to follow, won't know aim until things settle
Step 4: to follow, currently at 6%
Step 5: grown child
Step 6: huge mortgage ANNIHILATED!!
Step 7: ahhhh....

I keep mine in an ING account, if it's an absolute emergency I can just use a CC and transfer the money and cover it within a few days. I don't feel comfortable keeping cash on hand at home. kj

We keep our's in a savings acct. . Not only do I feel better having it in the bank but it works for me by earning a little interest while it sits there and waits on the next emergency...

We keep ours at the credit union where we have one of the car loans. Now that we live near Green Bay and the CU is near Milwaukee, we would have to justify a 3 hr drive to get that money.

Ours is here at home. For several reason.
1. The IRS likes to take anything we leave in the bank for any lenght of time.
2. If we get a storm its hard to get it out.
3. If we're traveling and the kids have an emergency we can tell them where it is so they can get to it. Yes, then we change the hidey spot.

I keep ours at home in a hiding spot, that only I know where it is. Not even DH knows where. I know he has a spot in his wallet that he keeps his Mad Money. But I have way too many children with their little dramas to have to drive to get at the $. In a few weeks I may start an account, once the kids are away at college again.

I keep just a small amount at home, part in a local savings account and part in an Ing account.

I have mine in the bank. I'd be afraid to keep it at home in case of fire or theft.

We have ours in an ING account. I would like to have at least part of it at home, but I don't trust myself and DH enough yet to not spend it.
