    Default Ummm...have I joined a cult?!?!?

Okay, as I've said, I'm new to this whole frugality thing and I think my friends are noticing a change. Today, they invited me out for pizza and instead I (with my two boys)came home to eat. I ate out yesterday and I thought twice in two days was too much.

I also mentioned shopping at Goodwill and one of them just about fell off her chair.

I'm not going overboard or cultish--I'm just changing my spending habits and suddenly I feel a little out of it.

Has anyone else felt the same with some of their friends?

I don't have any friends. (hee!hee!) No, seriously, I've never had anyone say anything to me about my frugal choices, but I guess that's just because they're used to it. I imagine if I were making some pretty serious changes in my spending habits like you are, they might look a bit askance. I wouldn't worry about it and I'd stick to my guns if I were you. I predict that before long they'll also be used to the "new" you and, who knows? Once they see how much better you are doing financially and how your level of worry about money has decreased, they might be coming to you for advice.

You my friend are in the Saving Zone. Do not be afraid, the money you didn't spend on some things can now go to other things. It will be OK.

LOL, doesn't mean you're in a cult....I've been not going to do things like that for a long time. If my friends are really my friends they accept it and understand. Now, that's just me. In your case, give them time to adjust to the new you. Hopefully they are really your friends and will accept you the way you are, and not how they wish you were.

Cults want to TAKE your money. . .we want you to KEEP your money. Your friends will get used to it. They should want the best for you. One day they might even ask you for some tips.

My friends try to watch their money as well, so they are not a problem. Some of my family members though have made fun of me and make little jokes about me re-using bows, gift bags etc. However, I am the only who owns a house and will have it paid off in 8 years, so who is laughing now?

Oh yes! This is a fiendish cult. Our whole purpose is to luuuuuure you in, make you stop spending money, thereby ruining the entire north american economy so that we can take over the world!!! mwaaa ha haaaa

Your friends will get used to it. There are a number of threads on "what do your friends say?". Most of us have *someone* who thinks we're a little bit bonked in the head just because we don't WANT to throw away 200$ on new clothes when the ones we have are just fine.

However, YOU will have to get used to looking at them and saying "STOP DON'T BUY THAT... IT'S A WASTE OF MONEY!!!!!" It'll take a bit of time to adjust to how ridiculously most people throw their money around.

    welcome cricket!

Oh yep we sure have gotten a few wierd comments and looks over the last few years while we buckled down and got out o the debt trap. I'm so tempted to brag when we get razzed about being "cheap"and say "yep we are frugal and look who are the ones with no debt but the mortgage. Oh wait thats us!! Oh and lets see who took the lovely 9 day disney trip with cash! Oh wait that was us too because we are cheap and could save for it!!!" As a matter of fact I don't think I've told anyone this but my fellow frugalites. I'm too afraid of getting "must be nice!" It is nice but it was years of work to get there.

Of course my mouth doesn't mutter what my brain thinks since that would be quite rude though I think some of the comments I've heard are a bit rude.

I think changing ourselves is sometimes harder on those who share bits of our lives than they are on the ones actually doing the changing.

    Hang in there!!!

I love to brag about my thrifty finds and money I've saved. I find that more people end up interested about what I'm doing. Your friends will get used to it.

Oh, that's my boyfriend, Johnny Depp. He comes & visits me in my dreams. I ask him for his autograph and he tells me, "sure, let's go into the over room & I'll give it to you!"

Like someone said, there are some other interesting threads about people's reactions. Kind of funny. You feel a little strange at first, but as you stick with it and see some success, you will feel on top of the world and far superior - lol. Most of my friends feel kind of sorry for me. They think I am this way because I am poor. I try to tell them it is not that I am poor, it is that I am planning to be comfortable from this point on! However, most of them just don't get it.

    Wink

I have to say that I have been getting positive feedback lately because our only debt is our mortgage. Hopefully, it will be paid within 2 years and we built our house in 1999. It is a great feeling and I sleep so well at night.
