    Angry Yikes!

We just found out it could cost us up to $2500.00 to add our 16 year old daughter to our car insurance!
Right now she still has her permit and is an added driver with no high premiums until she gets her licence. I think she'll keep her permit longer than usual.
In August we paid our car ins. premium in FULL for the first time, and now we would owe this outragious amount and they want it in full because it's to late for a payment plan.

This is over double than I expected.

I don't know how kids do it, I see them driving their own car plus ins. and in school?!

My daughter also told me in drivers ed. they mentioned keeping their permit longer because of the sky rocketing prices of insurance. So I did get heads up but didn't realize it was that bad. Even the insurance agent said the kids are buying cars for a few thousand and their insurance costs more than the car.
And the kids get offered by some parents to either pay for the car or ins., first the kids thought yeah I'll pay the insurance you pay for the car, then they get their unexpected ins. bills and changed their minds.

    Thanks for letting me vent.

Sometimes you can get discounts if they take safety coarses & the like. Good grades help bunches too at least with our State Farm insurance. They are both in college & the good grades get them a discout. Not sure about Nicole since she is over 21 but I think she still gets it. About $50 off every 6 months isn't bad.
That price seems high to me, maybe it's different in othr parts of the country. Boys usually have the highest & it's a noticable difference. No fun.

That is way too high - I have 2 teens (18 & 19) one boy and one girl: our is $1200 per year for the both of them (2 different cars).

I would definately shop around! My kids wouldn't be driving if it was that much for one!!

When we added our son a year ago as a full-time driver, our rates went from about $80 a month to $240. We were expecting it so we weren't quite so shocked. Our insurance rates him on all our vehicles, but we require him to work and pay for his part, which is about $120 a month.

I pay $470 a month to insure all 4 of us now. When they turn 21 your premiums will drop.

That seems high! Ours is going up $35 a month...about $400 a year. Mine'll be 16 in November.

We already had the car & insurance on it, though...and no loan, so it's just liability on a 97 saturn.....I think we pay 30 or so a month for it. That's why our guy said is was so cheap. He said most people buy another car for their kids and have loans so they need full coverage.

DS 17 just got his license and we added him to our insurance. We have 3 older pickups that are paid for and put him as driver on the one he drives the most. It uped our insurance by $50 a month to keep just liability on that truck. We were going to put full coverage on the truck he drives, but our insurance would have gone up to $2600 a year! ( currently it is $1500)They don't like to put full coverage on a vehicle that a teenage driver is on. We get the good student discount (honor roll) and he had taken driver's ed.

In PEIif the kids take drivers Ed(safety learning course). they get discount off their insurance and helps on the point system. But its still exspensive it usually runs if ur car is year 2000 or above, and extra $1200 to your insurance for the year. But that will go down after the first 6 months, if no accidents occur.

Hmmm... $2500/yr. is an awful lot. When we added our DD to our insurance, it went up by only about $500/ yr. What our insurance company did was insure our DD on one car only. In case of emergency she can drive the other cars, but she is listed as primarily driving one. Plus we also got the good student discount for her. With our last insurance company, it was going to be much more and that's what caused us to look around and change insurance companies. As someone else said, I would definitely call around. (Oh, and we also found that there was sometimes a big difference in prices depending on what insurance agency, not company, we went with. We called one Allstate agent and he gave us a higher quote than the one we're with now.)
    Good luck!

I just had to put insurance on for the twins!!! One got her license Monday and the other is going on Friday afternoon. 3400.00 on top of what our bill was already for the year. That is to put them on just for my van and not my husbands truck. It would have been just over 4000.00 for the two vehicles. How can kids afford insurance by themselves. They took drivers education which I did make them pay for the class which was 150.00 each but I paid 40.00 for six road lessons each so that was 480.00 for the two of them in about 4 weeks time. 60.00 each to take the road test. We are trying to get our old 95 Ford Escort running which has been sitting in our driveway for two years. At least that will save us for a few months before we need to get another car for them. Hopefully it will run.

Good luck with the new driver!

Nancy, I am from MA also. It is amazing to such a wide range of $ the ins. co. charge.

Of course I'm hoping we are way lower than the max of $2500. I should be getting the final numbers today.

Great excuse to have my daughter delay driving. Prayers for all young new drivers and their families.

In Massachusetts, 50% of all teens get into an accident their first year of driving. And there is no competition in auto rates thus it doesn't matter who you use - there is no shopping around - the rates are set by the state.
