I've bartered for services, but only with people I know. It's basically a process where you say something like, I'll take care of your horses for free if you teach me or my kid how to ride.... something like that.

I barter with friends as well. Usually for services. For example, a friend didn't have transportation and lives 40 miles roundtrip from work, instead of letting him pay for my gas (more than one ride) I asked him to come by and install a ceiling fan. I've done friends taxes in exchange for car detailing and cooked a weeks worth of dinners for guys who practically live at McDonalds
in exchange for used furniture. Target the need they have and you can usually work out a deal. Good Luck!

I bartered today and it felt good. My car started acting up this morning. I have a friend who has an extra vehicle and he let me borrow it. I asked him how I could pay him back, while holding my breath because I don't have a lot of extra money. He said well the kiwi fruit will be ready to pick in a couple of weeks and we need another set of hands for picking.
So, I'll drive the truck for a week or so in exchange for two days worth of picking.Robbin

I never barter for services but have neighbours who keep me supplied with tomatoes (enought to eat, can and for chili sauce) green peppers and cucumbers to eat and make pickles and relish and I in turn give them all the corn they want for freezing and eating and always give them the first bushels of apples I pick - works for us all.

I have been, unintentionally, bartering with DH's family for food. If we pick lemons from DMil's tree, we give her a pie. Last year, DH's aunt gave us a bunch of pumpkins, so when I made cookies and pies I gave them some....same with bananas. Just this weekend, I made bread from scratch and filled them with bar-b-que pulled pork I made in my slow cooker...gave some to DH's cousin since he likes my cooking and was working in the field near our house...he just called DH and said he has some dehydrated food coming his way (ordered some with his friend) and he is going to give some to me for my hurricane supplies
I have also given that cousin other baked goods in the past and he gives us corn when they harvest. Works for us

Ohhh we barter all the time - and we really love it.
It is usually with our friends.
We are currently bartering babysitting for free chiropractic care (for all four of us) I pick up our chiropractors kids at school two days a week, one day I keep them until after dinner, the other day I keep them for about an hour.
I am a SAHM, but also a qualified high school teacher. I often barter tutoring/exam prep/essay proofreading for other services. Like a friend of mine spent two days helping me strip wallpaper in return for about 5 hours of tutoring her daughter in math.
DH will help our friend who has a greenhouse (usually in spring when they are getting started for the season) and our friend will buy DH some sort of toy for his boat, or fishing gear.
It works well for us, and we often act as a bartering middleman, by hooking up friends to barter with each other! Maybe we should start taking a cut!

Unofficially, DH barters. He will help his friend in his butchering shop in return for free meat! Keeps the freezer stocked and is a big help in stretching the grocery budget!
He will also help with various chores in return for beef and pork.
