I'm getting into this canning thing.
I have just recently started canning and I'm lovin' it! A neighbor has a huge pear tree that I picked a huge box of pears from. Yesterday I made pear preserves. My mother used to can everything and I can remember her pear perserves were the greatest. Last weekend I made apple butter so I'm trying to figure want I can get my hands on to can next weekend. Most certainly going to plant a garden next year...I'm planning on getting DH to help me get a compost bin started. I want to raise organic veggies.

Watch those pears if you can them some cookbooks will tell you medium syrup. Stick with a light one. I posioned a couple of batches once.

Just thinking about my post. I really didn't poison them. lol They were just soooo sweet we had to rinse them with water before we could eat them. I did notice the spelling error I really need to start using that spell check.

Have you tried making pear sauce. It is better than applesauce I think so anyway. You make it just like applesauce but use pears instead. I always add a little cinnimon into mine.
I used to get all the pears I wanted as my sister had a big pear tree in her yard. Well she moved and now I do not have any pears.
I am going to ask for some on freecycle and craigslist and see if I can get some that way.Debra

Canning IS so much fun, isn't it? I love it. But it's only dh and me now. DD#2 is still here but often eats out. We just don't have a need for much canned goods these days. I am freezing food too, but am woefully short on vegetables this year. I sure hope I can find some this coming weekend.
I did pears too this year. And plums, plum syrup, crabapple sauce, crabapple jelly, Nanking cherry jelly, pear jam, and crabapple juice.

I used to can everything when all the Kids were home. Now I freeze some things, not much because there is just Jim & me.
We did can 14 pints & 2 qts. of Pickled beets yesterday. They came out great.
Keep canning, I always enjoyed doing it.
