Default DH saved us so much money this weekend!

We had to have the city come out at midnight last week to flush out a clog in our plumbing. This happens at least once a year, and until this last time, it's always been a problem on the city's side. This time the clog was on our property. There were tree roots growing into the pipe, and the pipe was cracked.

On Saturday DH went out there with a friend, and they dug about 3 feet down to get to the pipes. After the friend left, DH and I went to Lowe's and Home Depot to find the parts he'd need to replace the broken pipe. It took him several hours, but I think we paid only $50-60 for this repair. I'd hate to think how much it would cost if we'd have had to hire someone. The digging alone took the two guys over 3 hours! (We have clay soil, which is a major pain to dig in, plus they had to hack tree roots throughout the process.)

I tried to send some money home with DH's friend to treat him and his wife to dinner as a thank-you, but he wouldn't take it. I think I'm going to get a restaurant gift card and mail it to them. They'll be forced to take it then. Still, even if I do that, the repair is still under $100! Woo-hoo! I'm so glad I have a handy husband!

Oh wait. I just remembered it's more. Because the city had to come after hours, and the problem was found to be on our side, there's going to be a $100 charge added to our next water bill. Blah! But it's still less than a plumber!

Kudos to your DH and his friend for the handy frugal repairs. Isn't it great to have friends that come through when you need an extra hand. Sorry to hear about the charge by the city though.

That's great that your hubby and friend were able to do the job themselves! It would have cost a ton to get a plumber.

That is MUCH cheaper than what a plumber would have charged. Good for your DH and his friend for saving so much money and fixing it themselves!

When we had to have our entire sewer line from the house to the curb replaced several years back, it was $3000.00, so DH and his buddy have REALLY saved you some BIG $$!!! WTG, DH and friend!!!

It is nice to have a handy husband. Mine is very handy and saves us money all of the time. I am sure we could never afford anything if we had to hire everything done. That being said, my Dh replaced our septic all by himself. And we have that nasty, hard to dig clay soil too. It's not fun, but it has to be done. It could have run upwards of $6,000 to $10,000 to have it done here by a plumber. Yikes!
