It finally gets cold and furnance broke!!
It is the first snow and coldwe have had here in Ohio of the winter season, and wham, our furnace quit working. DH woke me up and at 4 am and told me , been up since trying to get it to work and to find a source for some heat. I have to sub today at our local school, and DH took a vacation day. He is so cranky!!!!A terrible way to start our day. He is going to buy a thermacouple and hope that it works, if not, we have to call the furnace man, $$$. I wanted to start this year with high hopes about money, and paying down debt. Keep your fingers crossed for us, that it is something simple.

Oh, I know!! Here in NJ it's finally winter, and my hot water tank broke
! And did the technician show up with the new one yesterday....of course not. Thankfully, I have tomorrow off. I was told at 10 am that he'd be here between 12 and 4, then when I called at 6 to check the status, I was told he'd be there last nite. I finally gave up at 10 and went to bed. Gonna be making some phone calls today

Sorry this is happening to you! Nearly the same thing happened to us two years ago. First stretch of freezing cold weather - the furnace dies. Yuck!

I also had this happen last year. I thought it was the thermostat, so I replaced it with a programmable one. When that still didn't work, I kept fiddling with it until I finally forced it to come on one night. I was sooo happy, until I smelled something burning. I went to the furnace closet and felt the door and it was HOT! I turned off the furnace, ran and got my manly neighbor. He said the flame (gas furnace) had 'rolled out' and that the previous owners apparently disabled the 'rollout sensor'. Had I turned the heat and on and gone right to bed, my house would probably have burned down!
I had to completely replace the unit, but thankfully it was only about $700. My neighbor and I installed it and he got the new furnace and assorted parts at cost from a friend who works in the HVAC business.
Good luck! Just make sure if you fix it, it is done right. Don't risk it like I did!

Update: The furnace is fixed!!!! Yeah!!! Dh decided to take it apart first before buying another thermacouple, we had just been not too long ago. He said it was very dirty and cleaned it up real good. Put it back, and it works now!!!! Thank goodness, but then our van which we just paid $503 to fix started leaking transmission oil again, (which was what we paid the $$ to have it fixed) and we took it back to the mechanics yesterday, so I don't know what is going to happen with that. Just found out that our county did reassessments of real estate, so next month I am sure that our taxes went up because we had some huge houses built this year around us. Yikes!!! I am not prepared for the taxes going up. Thanks for everyone's furnace advice and good thoughts luv you guys!!!!
