Red face OK ladies come to my rescue

So I broke down and bought a Sams Club membership,,,, and I have 20lbs of rice and catfood with NOTHING to put them in!!! HELP! I have 1 5 gal bucket....Woo hoo something for the cat food, now the rice.... Could I put the rice in one of those rubbermaid containers from wal mart? Or use one of those 5 gal water jugs for the rice? Are they air tight?

I too broke down (or was forced - depends on how you see it) and got a Sams Club Membership only to learn they dont even have a phamacy inside - OY! Dang my father! LOL He wanted to buy new kitchen chairs and I made him show me physical prices. If he could save $50 + for buying the chairs at Sams then we could get a memebership b/c it'd have paid itself off on the first trip. He did it. The lil bugger went and proved me wrong!

So now I have a membership and I dont even shop there I had given up Costco about 4 months ago and buy in bulk when things are on sale at the local grocery store. Im happy with that. But now my dad had me become the primary member for Sams....what to do?! At least its paid off for this year. Phew!

No need to rescue you - as long as you manage to save over the cost of your membership you're fine. Then you could say the membership paid for itself!

As for saving your dried goods purchased in bulk....We use a rubbermaid plastic container to store our rice and flour. So far nothings happened but we do use it often so we will see if anything funky starts happeing or growing. Just make sure its stored where a pet can chew at the containers and potentially put a hole into the corner of it and make sure the lids always snapped right on so the pet can bump the lid open. I think you'll do just fine. Or invest in super huge airtight zipper seal freezer bags and store the rice in baggies on your shelves and # them so you know which bag you need to use next.

It has never even occured to me to buy rice in that large of bag but I would divide it into large ziplock bags and store them in a rubber maid.

I don't buy rice in bulk but do buy wheat grains. You do have to worry about tiny critters getting in there. For rice you may want to freeze it and then store in your containers. I purchased some gamma seals online and nothing is supposed to get in there when you use those.

I store mine in gallon ziplock baggies, both cooked and uncooked. I do go ahead and cook about half of mine and freeze the day I buy it.

I'm a freezer in large glass jars and recycled ice cream buckets. That keeps the bugs at bay, especially here in florida. I've got an extra stack of ice cream buckets here send me an address and I'll ship you a a stack.

They don't have to be air tight for rice - it is stored in bags for months commercially.

I use big pickle jars to store a lot of things - of course first you have to eat the pickle :-0

You want to store the rice in a food-safe container. I get the 2 1/2 gallon or 5 gallon buckets used for icing, at the bakery area in Walmart (or any store with a bakery). They are glad to give them to you. Once, they didn't have any that were empty, so they said they would save the next one for me and I could pick it up the next day. I love these buckets. They come with lids, stack well, and are FREE!!!!!

My mom used to sing a song..Too pooped to pop and I ain't a lie'in.

It was a popcorn jingle from "her" day.

    Here it is...

    Now here's a funny story
    I hope you understand
    Listen very closely
    If you possibly can
    It's a story of
    Two popcorn kernels
    In a red hot pan
    One turned to the other
    And said, Hey man

    I'm too pooped to pop
    And I ain't lyin'
    I'm too pooped to pop
    Just layin' here fryin'
    Salt and and butter's ready
    And the fire is hot
    But seems like
I'm just too pooped to pop

    Too pooped to pop
    And I ain't playin' possum
    I'm too pooped to pop
And I do want to blossom
    Don't like the bottom
Want to get up on top
    It seems like I'm
    Just too pooped to pop

    Iowa's the state
    That's where I was born
    I really truly came
From a fine ear of corn
    My Mama and my Papa
    Were a wonderful crop
    You should have seen them
    Blow up when they
Put they put them in the pot

    Too pooped to pop
    And I ain't playin' possum
    I'm too pooped to pop
And I do want to blossom
    Don't like the bottom
Want to get up on top
    It seems like I'm
    Just too pooped to pop
